When daylight broke, they were taken to the Keep of the Eyes, a solitary structure virtually estranged from the rest of the mountain city save for a winding tunnel that was bored through the rock at gentle inclines. The winds whipped too wildly at that height for flying, giving it a natural defense from enemies and the overly curious that sought to intrude from the outside. In the tunnel, checkpoints were guarded in pairs, and when the tunnel broke and forked partway in a direction to one of the griffon holds, older beasts unfit for flight rested and growled deeply at the passing outsiders. There were times when the queen's defenses were lax, but the same could never be said for the Eyes; there was no greater treasure in Queyol to guard so fiercely ( ... )
