i think this site tells you how; scroll all the way to the bottom of the page, and it has "other western european" marks. short vowel mark, yes? subsitute the "i" for the "o" and i think you've got it.

That almost works when I switch to the U.S. Extended keyboard. In Word for Mac v. X, it makes the placeholder of the symbol and then refuses to accept the letter which I want to place beneath the symbol. What the shit, Word?

However, I'm still amazed that this is proving so goddamned difficult. Even that page you provided(which is the most helpful thing I've seen in months concerning this international characters deal) is mysterious and complicated compared to the old 'select any crazy thing. Insert.' Thank you, though - illuminating for everything but Word!

Goddammit, it even works in a fucking LIVEJOURNAL COMMENT BOX and it won't work in Word? See? Žižek, Žižek, Žižek! WHYYYYYYYYYY?????

this looks like a question for macforums. there are people there who absolutely live to tell someone like you and me, who only needs to know how to do weird little things every now and then, anything you don't know that they do, and a whole lot more. get thee there with speed...

Word for Mac sucks, sucks, sucks. I strongly suspect it can't be done. If you figure out how, let me know.

Wow. That's totally fucking crazy! Why is it that this program is all WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE A MENU? HOW ABOUT A COLOUR-CODED GROCERY LIST?, yet it can't support the approximately 30 extra foreign special characters? Priorities!

Where's the tree-hugging, multilingual Mac community NOW? (Using open-source stuff, I guess...)

It's fucking Microsoft. They haven't really updated Word for Mac for like five years. Word for OS X is just a port of Word 98 for system 9, or something. The guts predate unicode, and they can't be bothered.

Use frontpage, if you can.

Ah, I see!

And I don't know anything about Frontpage... all I've heard is that it's a web design program. Are we talking about the same Frontpage, here?

Why Word? ed_rex February 1 2006, 20:14:21 UTC
No promises, but you might want to try OpenOffice. I bet it does support Unicode.

When it comes to computers, I'm a creature of habit. If one program is better or worse than another, I tend not to notice because I'm so busy being lazily familiar with it. In this case, however... I mean, dude. This is pretty basic shit we're talking, here. A few extra little letter-squiggles!

I know, and that's why I'm betting OpenOffice will give 'em to you. Besides, I hate Microcrap and all its evil works.

Ahh yes, the first thing I figured out how to do with Word on the Quito...

okay, you've got to have Word open. Then you've got to go and open Font Book. Press Alt-Apple-T together and you'll get the 'Character Palette'. Go back to Word and you should find the Character Palette is still on top. In the Palette select 'Accented Latin', the Ž and ž are in there.

You can close the Font Book and the Character Palette will still be there with Word, Safari, every programme you're using.

But which version of Microsoft Word are you using? Apparently getting super-special foreign characters is a Unicode thing that only Word 2004 can do, but Word v. X has no concept of 'foreign' countries beyond France and Germany. In Word (using the U.S. Extended keyboard), if you can type Option+V, Z (where Z is the first letter in Slavoj's last name) and come up with a 'Ž', then you're (apparently) using Word 2004 since it supports Unicode ( ... )

Yes, we're all out to get you to go through "the whole character palette and international keyboard-dooley thingamagig." Think of it as a surprise party in the spirit of eternal recurrence.

Be warned, there is some in compatability between Macs and PCs with the ž-esque characters. I've sent from stuff from the PC at work to my powerbook at all I get is _ which isn't very reassuring. It happens the other way around too. The only solution I've got is to use standard lettering. I'm sure a work around will appear some place.

And I've just realised that the method I gave you doesn't work for Word... what a bitch... But you can open the document in Text Edit and add the Ž action in there... Because Word isn't Unicode and the caron diacritic is you're basically screwed.

Hah, I just replied re: this STUPID RETARDED PROBLEM above.

I am in awe that I am screwed. I've come to expect programs not being able to do simple shit because they're buggy etc., but come on... accents? Do we really need all 6955858381258686 wingdings and webdings? HELL NO. We need the ability to make Ž's!
