I make it a huge point to NOT read reviews, other than one or two from those whose opinions I value, so I didn't even notice Morgan's shirtlessness till I read this. And yeah, MY biggest thought about the scene was "Man, don't screw up the tats, they're gorgeous". I don't watch the show for the "eye candy" but for the cast, storyline, and sheer brilliance of the writers/staff. I have sites I can go to for the pix for my candy fix; the show is for my mind. Maybe it's bec. I'm older, (old, but not dead :)), so I don't drool, I just bite my nails and worry that someone will get hurt, or the unsub will escape. I get wrapped up in the story; hopefully, after all the drooling and squeeing, those in it for the candy will sit back, rewind and watch again for the sheer enjoyment of a well-written, well-acted show. But I don't sweat it, bec. while it would be nice if they watched for more mature reasons, they ARE watching which means the show will remain popular, as it should.
Thing is, I'm the same way. I read a very select few reviews/analyses from people I know in fandom (Bear, the criminalmindsfanatic blog), and I have half a dozen people on my buddylist who watch CM.
I actually went and checked out some other reviews/reaction threads to see if I was seeing things, and...uh. No. There was a lot of "I love this ep" "I hate this ep" and a lot of "OMG Derek's shirtless" regardless of opinion.
I watch for the same reasons - writing, acting, editing, etc. Eye candy is not a consideration.
It's not that I'm disappointed in the reaction, exactly, it's more that the show offered the opportunity to do so. The slippery slope of 'how much eye candy to offer'. And this went too far for me to feel comfortable with, in keeping with the feel of the show. If that makes sense.
