2. Detergent: liquid or powder?
I grew up with powder, but have discovered the joys of liquid.

No, I could never catch the right cycle, I tend to forget about laundry.
4. And then: clothesline or dryer?
I used to have a dryer that would shrink all my shirts, so I have a habit of hanging them on a rack then fluff them in the dryer, everything else goes in the dryer.
5. Do you fold things straight off the line or out of the dryer? What do you iron (or have someone iron for you)?
I put it in a basket and spread it out on the couch. I own an iron and have only used it about 10 times.

I've used mostly top-loaders in my life, when it's a front-loader it's not my machine...

Liquid. Smells better too.
3. Rinse cycle: fabric softener or another additive?
None! I keep on thinking about adding white vinegar or baking soda (not together of course), but have never gotten around to it. I don't see a need for fabric softener, that's just a waste of chemicals. (My grandmother, when she was alive, loved to add starch to her clothes and sheets.)

In Taiwan, clothesline except in the wet days of winter, or when Mom wanted to get some certain clothes dry fast. We even had a special laundry balcony in the back of our apartment unit. In the US, it's a mixture of dryer for some things, and hangers for others. No room for a clothes rack in my apartments in the US...
