170: Rich and Rare

Jul 08, 2007 02:42

Lately I have been assembling recs sets, clicking on links, and staring gloomily in dismay when I realize one of them is now friends-locked. Curse you, LJ Strikethrough!

Anyway. It's apparently been making me all slumped and possibly even emo, which eventually led to this conversation:

Me: Alas, my latest potential set also has an unlinkable ( Read more... )

vorkosigan, gilgamesh, [rec theme: small fandoms], harold and kumar, askewniverse, dead like me

I loved that Dead Like Me story, and you should watch that show, it is awesome and funny.

Well, sometime in the next eon, it should crop up on our Netflix queue, and then Best Beloved will watch it; if she likes it enough, maybe I will, too. But I have - you know, a worry that it won't live up to the story. That's always the problem with my fan-fiction-first approach to TV; a lot of times, the FF is better than the show itself.

Wow, does everyone like Dead Like Me? I'm starting to think I should inch it up in our Netflix queue.

It's definitely a lovely concept (from the little I know about it), and I can see that it could be fabulous if done well.

For me, at least, the best 'Dead Like Me' stories transcend pairings.

Ooo! Do you by any chance have recs of other Dead Like Me stories? This is the only one I've read, I think.

*whimpers*

This is a tragedy. They probably are on ff.net, and I don't have the courage to face random browsing there again; the last time I did that (I was desperate for stories in a specific smaller anime fandom - I had no choice), it nearly killed me.

*raises hand* I know a long, multi-volume epic in which Methos is Enkidu. But I don't think Gilgamesh sticks around, so. Really, your idea is still free.

*hopeful look*

Do you have a link, by any chance?

No! It's totally fine that it's not! Really really fine, because if there's any story I shouldn't write even more than the SGA x HL I'm currently working on much against my own better judgment, it's the *Gilgamesh* x HL one.

Mythos. It's at the bottom of the page, there are three parts, but the third is on her adult fanfic page because it's slash, here.

Though really, I recommend the other stories on the page more highly. Ok, well, you should read Mythos at least until the bit where Amanda leads the rescue. Then you should scroll up and read Winterborne. Mythos isn't out of character, and I remember some great bits, it's just that I also remember asking myself--I mean, really, I'm not summing up, this question actually crossed my mind--"When is Methos getting raped next? It's been an entire chapter.")

Oh! I actually had that one already in a tab to read - Winterborne, anyway - because of you, so thank you and yay!

"When is Methos getting raped next? It's been an entire chapter."

Oh. Um. See, rapefic is just not for me. (Okay. If saffronhouse writes, it is. She's the exception to my rule, totally.) I take it it's rather rape-intensive? I mean, not just - I don't want to use the term "casual rape," which sounds awful, but, you know, is it detailed, or is it just mentioned? Because, on the one hand, Methos as Enkidu! And, on the other hand, well - rape. Which does not mix well with my issues.

Neil Patrick Harris is clearly a man of depths.

...And now I'm wondering if minim_calibre knew he was gay when she wrote Screenwriter's Blues. Either way, she's a person of great genius, of course.

I have long assumed NPH was gay. He just sort of hit every flag on the radar detector, which made the NPH-as-pussyhound role in Harold and Kumar that much more amusing to me.

I got my assignment for Yuletide. CACKLED, because I knew JUST what I wanted to do, went to the Trusty Internet, my Virtual Steed, to confirm some shit...

And discovered that NPH had just, in point of fact, come out THAT DAY.

True facts!

AWESOME. It was a Yuletide Miracle!

(And someday I want to get my Yuletide assignment and know JUST what I want to do, instead of spending a week dithering and wondering if I should write the fandom I signed up for or this other one over here. Is there a god I should sacrifice to or something?)

::happy sigh:: There are not enough good things to say about "A Maze of Twisty..." I'm pretty sure I left incoherent feedback amounting to "Yes! Yes! That's it! Squee!" when I first read it :)

That story captures the characters so perfectly and, well, I'm always a sucker for a good Ivan story.

Oh, god, I know, and the thing is, I totally resisted reading it for the longest time, and now I cannot recollect why. I mystify myself sometimes.

It so perfectly does. And I, myself, am always a sucker for a good Gregor story; I believe I loved The Vor Game so much simply because it was Gregor out of the Emperor's shackles, if that makes sense. (As well as being a sucker for an Ivan story, of course.) Although it's been interesting to see Gregor grow into the shackles to a certain extent over time.
