Fandoms I Have Loved 12: Stargate: SG-1

Jun 26, 2007 00:02

I wanted to get this finished in time for the last episode of SG1. I, um, didn't. (I know you're shocked.) And you may wonder why I bothered to write up an introduction post for a show that a) has been around for 10 years and b) is now over ( Read more... )

XD Brilliant! SG1 and I have been on-again off-again for pretty much its entire run. Can't say I am terribly "fannish" about it (only one icon, so sad), haven't seen the whole show, and I sure as heck can't keep any of the canon straight. Yeah, I don't know who Martouf is either. But this whole post was great and I'm gonna scope some fic.

So needs to be an icon, LOL.

Yeah, I don't know who Martouf is either.

Here's what I know about Martouf:

1. He's from another planet.
2. Sam dated him.
3. And then something bad happened.

Not much help, is it?

I'm gonna scope some fic

Yay!

Sam got taken over by a Goa'uld once. Only it turns out it wasn't a Goa'uld but a Tok'ra. Her (usually female hosts) name was Jolinar and she had a Goa'uld assasin after her. The assasin trys to kill her (and Sam as her host) and she gives her life to safe Sams.
Later SG-1 meets the Tok'ra and Martouf (Martouf is the host, the symbiotes name is Lantash). Turns out he was Jolinar's lover and Sam still has parts of her memories/feelings.
This is also when Sam's father gets his symbiote (Selmak). He had cancer and was going to die. Selmaks host was dying and she needed a new one.
Martouf later dies. (All men interested in Sam die (this could also be a source of angst for her). Exept Pete, she just dumps him.)

I'm glad you explained this. I kind of thought Martouf was Sam's dad.

Ooops! Fixed. (It's just, you know, 30% of fandom's guys are named Jack, and 25% are named John, and I get confused sometimes.)

Thank you for pointing that out. I really like John Crichton, and the poor man has enough problems without name confusion.

I *laughed out loud*, for reals, reading this. And you NEVER EVEN ONCE mentioned that Jack O'Neill is MacGyver.

I think one of my favorite stories in this fandom (aside from The Other Half, which, wow, sold me on so many things, slash fandom included, that I wasn't entirely certain about at the time), is Sinner's Grove, horrible and violating as it is.

This is because I have only a vague idea of who MacGyver was. He...fixed things, right? And had bad hair. I mean, I understand Jack O'Neill also used to be on a soap opera, and I have about the same level of knowledge about that.

I sometimes, in my darker moments, refer to SG1 as the fandom that made me love rapefic, and when I say that, I'm basically talking about Sinner's Grove. God, that story is just - it's dark and horrible but it's also about how you pick up, how you go on, how SG1 survives, and I love that so much. And I love the way it explores the real possibilities of the SG world, which is something we've always had to rely on FF to do ( ... )

MacGyver could make a bomb with an eraser and a piece of chalk. MacGyver could make an IUD with a piece of floss and a bit of soap. MacGyver could make a shortwave radio with a stick of gum and some lint.

...too bad that the episodes REALLY do not stand the test of time, and look gag-worthy in retrospect (that's just my opinion, YMMV).

And honestly, it wasn't so much that I doubted *slash*, per se, but there was a time I was wary of fanfiction in general, having stumbled across some truly horrid Spike-from-Buffy-fic at first. I admit I wondered whether or not pushing the kink/more story/character need buttons was WORTH the internal humiliation I experienced when reading the dreck I *thought* was representative of fanfic in general.

Obviously, that phase didn't last very long, and I found the good stuff.

And, re: Sinner's Grove -- one of my favorite moments is when Jack is haltingly explaining how the thing that became real was, in fantasy, really something he thought about, but it was... it was hot, and done with love and passion ( ... )

MacGyver could make an IUD with a piece of floss and a bit of soap.

At which point all females in the vicinity would politely but firmly decline to use it, one assumes.

MacGyver could make a shortwave radio with a stick of gum and some lint.

...Suddenly I am picturing MacGyver working for Batman. Oh, this can't end anywhere good. WHY DO YOU ALWAYS DO BAD THINGS TO MY BRAIN, LYNN? (Except when you write Hikaru/Akira. That FIXES my brain. Not that you should feel obligated or anything.)

Oh, I hear that. I - okay. I actually sealed my fate by publicly mocking fan fiction before I had actually read any of it. Kind of a lot. Because I doubted, too! I had heard the horror stories! I had read a few parodies!

...And then I found some, and just, wow. Totally sold. For life. (This is what happens when we loudly mock things that other people love, folks: we end up loving them, too. It is fate.)

one of my favorite ( ... )

I find this hilarious because:

(1) I have seen almost all of Stargate:SG1 cannon [with the exception of the series finale and a couple of episodes in season ten] and am having to think really hard to get what you are trying to reference, probably because I have never really read any Stargate:SG1 fanfiction. Be assured that if I ever get the desire this will be the first place I look.

(2) I had a serious 'WTF?' moment upon seeing this because I had thought that you had already done SG1, after SGA.

(3) It is three am and I got six hours of sleep last night.

(4) Your tone is humorous. I envy it.

This is a sad thing! (In my world, anyway.) Is there anything I can rec that might convince you to start?

Ooo, how about vids? Vids are a nice canon-fandom bridge. (And they're where I got a lot of the stuff above - like the Jonas Quinn/bananas thing. Informative! Shiny! Short!)

I had thought that you had already done SG1, after SGA.

Sadly, no. But, well, I got it done. Eventually.

It is three am and I got six hours of sleep last night.

I feel your pain, totally. It is five a.m. I haven't been to sleep yet. I need to be up in three hours. I have a feeling tonight will be a big win for the insomnia. *bonds with fellow sleepless person*

Your tone is humorous. I envy it.

Thank you!

I am trying to think of something that you could rec that could change my mind, but I really think that SG1 just isn't for me. I am not really in love with any one of the characters as i know some people are. I don't have strong feelings either way for Jack. Their immoralities don't really interest me. All the fic seems to be either porn or angst; which I guess I get enough of from SPN? I don't know what it is. I like Vala though. She is cool. Ben, too. Maybe something about ancients?

But you make vids seem very appealing! I have already seen most of cannon. Putting the best parts to song? How could you go wrong? The banana thing just always reminds me of John giving the lemon to Ben's character to threaten Rodney.

Aw, well, I had really bad insomnia/waking up at four in the morning this year. Go to bad later and getting up later seems to be helping me get caught back up. At least I didn't have to go to work today.

SG is one of the few shows that I can claim to have 90% of, yet cannot keep the canon straight in my head at ALL. It is brain-twisting.

Still, I love the fic like woah.

I think it is possible that the canon writers share your pain. Which is sad. They get paid for this! You'd think they'd, I don't know, take very detailed notes or something. (I can teach them three different methods of outlining, if that would help.)

Still, I love the fic like woah.

Yup yup yup yup. *nods vigorously*
