Hey. You guys know everything, so: does anyone out there know about tea? Specifically, I'm looking for loose-leaf tea that I can buy online that is very, very tasty. Like, a nice assortment of it, maybe. Like, if you were going to get loose-leaf tea as a present, what specific teas would you want ( Read more... )

Thank you!

Any particular type or flavor you suggest? How do you pick teas? How do you tell what is a tasty tea that a person might like to get as a gift?

Well. I've seen her drink, um, like Jasmine and vanilla tea, and like them a lot. And she seems to like mostly black teas - Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Darjeeling. I've never seen her drink chai. She'd probably love mint tea. (Or anything with ginger. The woman is a ginger fiend.) So I guess - strong-flavored teas and tea blends? I'm just guessing, though.

Does any of that seem to point in a specific direction?

Both! Flavor suggestions particularly welcome at this point, since I had no idea there were so many tea options in this world.

Hee. Well there's a lot of personal preference.

Caffeine junkies and people who like strong flavors are probably attracted to the black teas (ear grey, irish breakfast, are very traditional. Then there's oolong and assam and chai which are from a different part of the world and tend to be spicier. Chai is my comfort tea, it's all cinnamon and ginger and allspice). Green is high caffeine but usually a more delicate flavor.

White teas are too new to me to be able to really say much, but they're also naturally caffeinated and are quite enjoyable. They're one (along with green) that tends to get mixed a lot. (Green chai... mmm)

Red tea is decaff most of the time. Sweeter and often a good nighttime tea.

Hmm. There's also fruit teas, which I hate, so don't ask me about them :) There's also several lovely holiday blends, which I enjoy in the winter.

Any questions?

I mean, sure, he can't keep track of each fallen Robin

... was that a Leonard Cohen joke? I think I might love you.

It was indeed. But it's not original to me, I don't think; I don't remember who discussed vidding DCU to Chelsea Hotel No. 2, though.

(And that is so a Batman song.)

I have yet to be sucked into the CRAAAAACK that is comics fandom (sheerly because anything with that much canon to learn would drive me up the wall in short order), but... yes, I think I know just enough to get that joke. And it is funny.

I am a huge tea fan, my very favorite place to shop though is teasource.com. Their Earl Grey is quite possibly the best thing ever (they have several types, the white tip is where it's at though) and I love quite of few of their other teas as well. My second favorite being Blue Mountain Spice, black tea with cardamom is a damn happy thing.

As for the brewing, my very favorite method is using the mug found here;

Their tea is pretty average, but that mug makes a wonderful tasting tea.

Oooo, thank you. Pretty. And the blooming teas would like nice in that mug.

So, white-tip Earl Grey? *makes note*

And the Blue Mountain Spice sounds excellent. Given the person I'm giving it to, though, possibly I should look for something flavored with ginger.

The happy thing about said mug is that it has a filter and the brewed tea drains out of the bottom, leaving all of the leaves behind. I was using a gold filter before that, and it worked well. The flavor was just so much better when the tea is not constrained by anything.

Teasource does make a blend called silk road that is pretty much just black tea and ginger. It's quite tasty. They have another called Black Velvet that is another favorite, and if she likes the strong flavors, it might be just the thing. It's the black tea, peppermint, anise and licorice. It works very well together and actually produces an amazingly smooth tea.

So here I am sitting down at my computer and thinking Gee I really need something to distract me from all the schoolwork I should be doing. And then I see that you've posted!

And not only that, but you've posted a Scrubs rec! I've only just got into Scrubs stuff and it's now being penciled in at the bottom of my list of obsessions.

And now I will click on all these attractive links!

Thanks!

*beams*

It is why I am here, to provide distraction to those laboring under the cruel lash of work!

*extremely pleased*

And I do enjoy a good Scrubs story. There aren't many stories out there, but what's there is generally quite good.

Hmmm. I should look into getting a Scrubs icon, I suppose.

*makes mental note*
