So I got this feedback today...

ROFLMFAO!! This is so funny. I love the mnemonic--and I love that it actually exists!! That's simply hilarious. And kudos on actually being able to use spelling and grammar check, unlike the unfortunate many on this website. You even got the people in character! I'm amazed--so many West Wing fanficcers have no ( Read more... )

She thinks getting characters right is a bonus?

Well, yeah. *g* I frequently tell people this in feedback; I mean it as a compliment. Because many people who write otherwise excellent fiction -- grammer ok, words all pretty like -- have no grasp of characterization as presented on the actual show. So...yeah.

She must read a lot of HP fanfic...getting the characters to be "in character" *is* usually a bonus or, at least, worth commenting on. :-)

short bus Hee! I have been avoiding ff.net like The Plague recently. In the past, I have found some really great stories there, but it is like wading through knee-deep muck just to get to them. However, I will admit that the comments there are often highly amusing.

It's truly sad how much terrible writing there is in so many fandoms. And, worse, how many good ideas are spoiled by sloppy execution.

Don't you think it's sad that half of the readers of ff.net probably won't even notice the difference between your writing and that of the people who don't know their apostrophe from their elbow. Never mind what a comma's for...

While I tend to agree with you that getting the characters right ought to be a given, I also know that I learned everything I know about fanfic from that crazy list where I met you, where the quality of writing always was significantly better than the world at large. I guess we're spoiled. Browsing around places like ff.net will tell you that there are people posting fics who can't yet spell the character names, much less capture the personalities. Or believe they need to!! I can't tell you how many times I've heard the argument that the writer doesn't feel the need to be true to character "because it's fiction and you can make up anything you like." Excuse me while I go bang my head on the desk.
