UK perspective here for you. I went on strike for part of a 40 minute lesson (refusing to cover absent colleagues was part of the work to rule action)and was docked four days pay, because the management considered I was not supposed to be horrible enough to go on strike. I said face to face to aggressive management verbal bullying on this that if middle of the road people like me did not go to union meetings, who would be left there to vote on issues. I am pleased and privileged to report I taught a dinosaur to think that day, in the middle of an East London staff room... 1987 that was, and it's still the same? Shame on the employers, booo!
Teachers should get combat pay. Its a tough and sometimes dangerous job. Teachers make a huge difference every single school day in kids lives and should be paid accordingly. Strike away! I hope you get all the concessions you want.
The school system is so fucked up that I wish all teachers in the country would strike and force people to realize what the hell is going on with education. Shit that has no practical use for 95% of the population is being taught in the 'free' schools, and stuff that 95% of the population needs is being taught in college, which costs a bazillion dollars. It's ridiculous. Teachers, firefighters, police, EMS...they all get the short end of the payroll while dipshits who hit balls with wooden sticks and nothing else get money out the ass. It's sickening.
