As for spraying your bandana, there's stuff out there made by Sawyer that you actually soak clothes in to repel bugs. The best part is that they're great for repelling ticks too! The downside is that they have permethrin, and I know it's fatal to cats. Not sure about ferrets, you'd have to check into that. But you soak your clothes and it stays in for at least six washes, or frequent head-soakings. I swear by it, it works great when I go on river trips or hiking.
