The winter of End World was a fell thing. I admit, I had only felt its like in the bitter north. But it was not only the icy chill and walls of snow that threatened us...
One thing you must understand of that place, my lady, was that it was where all worlds met. Therefore, things bled through as a raw wound through a bandage... The shift and turn of the tower brought many things, from many realms, and in winter...
It so happens that in Westeros, there is a legend told of the coldest of armies. The Others walk garbed in frost, dead to our world. They are strong and they are quick, they know neither pain nor fatigue - only one thing can bring them down. And with them come wights, not near so strong, but many. The touch of all is an infliction of agonizing cold, and their weapons shatter steel.
Every winter night, we were locked in battle with them. Without fail.
