Service With a Snark

Saturday I went out to dinner with a guy I've recently met.  Like many big-bellied brethren, booths aren't always my buddy.  So I asked the hostess for a table (of which there were several empty two-tops within eyesight ) & the hostess cheerfully & hastily leads us to a booth.  Though I've never been a waiter, I've always felt for people who wait ( Read more... )

Yeah, I've had the same problem quite a few times which is why I always ask "Can I have a table NOT a booth".
No way that can be misunderstood.

Half the time they have the foresight to ask beforehand, but even if they don't I've never had a problem requesting a table unless if the restaurant is really crowded.

I will request a booth at Cheesecake Factory, though, because their booths have extra room & their wicker chairs suck.

One thought I had on this...

She might've been preoccupied with a seating order system the restaurant had. I know they have these to help ensure even distribution of service duties to the watiters/waitresses.

She probably was just dim-wittedly thinking "I've got to give the next seat to Dina...Jolene will kill me if I double-seat her!" If she was clear-headed, she should have listened to your request and seated you at a table that another server had available.

That's possible. Though, 3 of the 5 tables within sight of the front poduim were next to each other in the same section.

(Disclaimer: none of this is meant to make an excuse for the hostess)

Did you go early or late? Sometimes, when you go at non peak times, the host stand is told to only seat certain sections because the other waiters are either off duty or doing sidework. Dumb hostesses are pretty much single track minds when it comes to following directions. Also, most restaurants see booths as being more desireable than tables and will actively try to seat people there since 99% of the patrons usually ask for a booth if brought to a table. Makes it easier for the hostesses to auto seat the booths to avoid confrontation, but in your case, I guess it was the opposite reaction.

We were there at a peak time, but the restaurant was maybe a third full.
