When Jason Street asked Lyla Garrity to be his girlfriend it was a bright, sunny afternoon.
He was nervous, palms sweaty as if he had just come from practice rather than going to, but he saw hope shining in her eyes and it made him stand up straighter. When she said yes, clear as day, he kissed her cheek like a gentlemen before running away.
When Jason Street asks Lyla Garrity to marry him, it’s dark.
He isn't the boy who endured endless teasing as he worked up the courage to ask her out, and she isn't the girl who made him wait until the second date to kiss her on the lips. Still, as he touches the soft fabric of her coat with a small part of his body that can still actually feel things, he thinks that that doesn't really matter.
They're not who they were before, but maybe that's okay.
Maybe they're better.
He knows the proper thing to do in this situation is to get down on one knee, but as he sits there, stuck in the chair, he feels as if he is down on both knees, literally begging Lyla: to marry him, to love him - not like she did before, but more.
