Title: on rainbows
Fandom: Generation Kill
Characters: Evan, with appearances by others (gen)
Rating/Warning: PG-13(ish, depending on how you feel about swearing)
Prompt: #24 - a rainbow @
story_lotteryDisclaimer: Based on the HBO mini series (which I do not own) and is not meant to be a reflection of the real people. This didn’t happen.

Author’s Note: This is just a little interlude the prompt made me write. It could be set anywhere in the later half of the series I guess, no real spoilers. Much love to

Evan looks out the window of the humvee and is surprised into half a smile.
They've been driving for hours to a location no-one seems to be sure of (least of all Encino Man) and the droning, endless rolling sound of the multitude of vehicles behind them echoes everyone's mood well enough for no words to be necessary. The hot, thick air burns, while the occasional jerk of Hasser's leg next to him as he stops himself from falling asleep prevents Evan from doing the same. Not that the continued thrum of machinery wouldn't have done that anyway, as it pricks his ears, until suddenly he can't hear it anymore because he's stopped paying attention to anything but the view out of the corner of his window.
He's staring at a rainbow.
He's pretty sure it's a rainbow anyway. Night is about to fall and he hadn't noticed any rain recently, not even that far away into the distance, but the coloured lights are curved just so, there isn't any other word he can use to describe it.
"What are you smiling about, Reporter?"
Evan looks back, and meets Person's quick glance, before he turns his attention back to following the yellow road. "I just...saw a rainbow." It sounds less poignant than it felt. He is expecting Person to rip into him or explain why the war in Iraq boils down to rainbows, or say anything really, but Trombley responds first with, surprisingly, a loud shudder.
Evan studies the passenger next to him. "You don't like rainbows?"
Trombley makes a face. "Only gays actually like rainbows. They're just...weird. It's like they're there, but they're not. It's creepy."
In the front of the vehicle, Colbert and Person share a look, before Colbert turns to stare out the window again, leaving Person to go into acute detail as to why Trombley really is a twisted motherfucker. Evan is too tired to follow it, let alone put pen to paper and record it, but somehow, the over zealous rant is far a more soothing background noise than the silence and whirring of machinery.
The rainbow grows smaller in the distance as the humvee drives ahead, until Person makes a turn and he can't see it anymore. To his left, he hears a grumble. "Stupid fucking rainbow."
