It was a motel room along Route 66 while tracking a Multiple Personality (which was to say that the person had the ability to duplicate themselves and be in two places at once) that Bennet had begun to wonder. “It’s an act, isn’t it,” he mused aloud, letting the curtain fall from his fingers, glancing over his shoulder at Claude, who was watching some obscure movie from the thirties ( ... )

"You know, you really could stand to be a little... nicer," Bennet said, rolling his eyes as he pulled away from his driveway. Claude was in the passenger seat, chewing thoughtfully on a toothpick he'd swiped from Bennet's kitchen.

"I'm not not nice," said Claude.

"Lyle's terrified of you and Sandra thinks you're a jerk."

"Claire likes me. She named her new pet after me."

"It's a worm, Claude."

"So?" Claude rolled down the window and spat the remnants of the toothpick out of the moving vehicle. "Worms are very noble creatures."

Bennet looked away from the road long enough to give him a look of disbelief. "My seven year old daughter dug up a worm from our back yard, put it in a shoebox, and named it Mr. Claude. And this is supposed to be evidence of the positive impact you're making on the world."

"Probably not for the worm," Claude conceded. "It'll probably be dead by morning."
