I only spent a couple of years living in the USA and in that short time many ideas from the republican side of politics just upset me for their idiocy and notions about civil "freedoms".

Here in Australia incandescent household globes are going off the market next year. No body seems to mind or protest.

A lot of Americans agree with you on your view of Republicans.

It's a very deep cultural thing in the US to be very suspicious of government over-reach, but Republicans play on that sentiment to the hilt (as you may have noticed).

I hope this hasn't actually worked its way into the Senate. Or was this just Repulican-controlled House tomfoolery masquerading as a legitimate use of a Representative's time?
