Good news from China:Western countries continue to rely heavily on coal-fired power plants built decades ago with outdated, inefficient technology that burn a lot of coal and emit considerable amounts of carbon dioxide. China has begun requiring power companies to retire an older, more polluting power plant for each new one they build ( Read more... )

The caption below comes via a very good friend who's also a long-time landscape architect, currently with a major firm in Tacoma, Wash. (and he's managed to steer them towards green building and thinking about the built environment differently - yay, David!)

"This is very, very cool. The use of micro bonds for getting solar
installed on homes and businesses, modelled after the municipal bonds
for city works. What this model does, (written up on the NY Times
too)is lessen the impact of residential customers and others trying to
go green with solar, but the upfront costs are so steep that many people
back away from it.

Should be done here [Puget Sound], and I think for things like wind energy at the neighborhood scale too!"
