"You are so angry, but you really are only having youself to blame, you know."

That smile again.

"You are needing to be much more careful on who you are picking for friends."

That brought back the white-hot slither of anger -- Rayne had been her only friend in this place, or at least the only one that she saw often, the only one that took care of her every single time the house decided to show its true colors. The pat on her head only seemed to make it worse. It was so much like --

“Is easy mistake, I know.”

Forgiveness? And excuse? An easy mistake... one that he'd made? The girl blinked for what felt like the first time in ages, trying to process any possible implications of that -- or at least she was, until the patting suddenly turned into stroking. He leaned forward, said, "But you should hoping she is very good friend... or this is go very badly for you indeed." and his - it was almost difficult to call them fingers, considering the fact that the flesh seemed so far from natural (she still couldn't figure out ( ... )

Machi was to all appearances unsympathetic to her tears and trembling, unaware of the memories he'd triggered. Appearances were often deceiving, though--it would have hit him hard had Machi been anything resembling his normal self. Unfortunately for Naminé, he wasn't, and his features hardened, biting back whatever empathetic inclinations he had. "Sorry, girly, crying is not helping you ( ... )

"Sorry, girly, crying is not helping you."

It rarely ever helped anyone, except in fairytales. And even then, it only helped the beautiful princess with the fairy godmother and the knight in shining armor. Who ever heard of it doing anything for the ugly little witch?

Machi may not have been quite as devoid of emotion as her previous captors, but the very concept of even attempting to gain sympathy had long since been eradicated from her mind. She cried because she could do nothing else -- and even that, she did grudgingly.

How dare he accuse -- no, calm down. Hold your temper, inexperienced though you might be. He didn't know. And... it wouldn't have made much difference if he did, would it? She was very much aware of the cold metal of the gun pressing against her skin. 'No,' she thought, 'it wouldn't. "Very good! ( ... )

To any stranger, Rayne would seem as calm and collected as she always was. But there were hints there, for people who knew her. The small frown between her eyes, where she tried to keep her expression from falling, the way her eyes darted to the side as if she expected to see somebody there, the way her fingers twitched as if she was trying to keep herself from clenching and unclenching her hands. Occasionally, her already trembling breath would hitch, and she shoulders would shake ever so slightly. No, things were definitely not alright ( ... )

Machi had the good grace to look surprised, at least at first. Then he laughed, a laughter born from irony, from shock, from guilt, from the complete sense of control and from black humor, the best defence mechanism a liar could have. "Yes?" More laughter. "You must be very unlucky person then!" He was still laughing when the sharp clacking of Rayne's heels reached his ears, followed by a few moments of silence and then the sharp snikt of metal as she pulled down huge weapons he knew quite well. He clammed up, but a broad smile spread across his face ( ... )
