Characters: Nina Tucker, Break Setting: Attic Time: Night 18 Summary: After murder, there must always be tea Warnings: Post Character Death? Traumatized Lolis? ( Are You Looking For Me? )
Break had been waiting, perched atop a stack of boxes in a corner. He knew it wasn't strictly necessary for him to wait for the little girl to wake up. It might not even be Nina, for all he knew; he had never seen her before, and he had only hear her voice very briefly back in the other room, when she screamed. She hadn't had time for much more. But it sounded like her, and she had called him by name, as if she expected him to fix things somehow, and he hadn't even tried
( ... )
Tears couldn't just stop, they wouldn't allow it. Once you'd work yourself up for a nice hard cry, there was little to do but allow it to happen. Much as new arrivals might make you want to stop crying.
Nina sniffled, tiny shoulders tense and cowered back further into her box. She knew Mr. Break. Knew him, remembered him from the bedroom and Mr. Nanakai and the little fox creature and Ms. Emily.
Knew him also, from the room with the monster-boy and the pain and death and blood.
She looked around, trying to find his monster-boy friend, but Mr. Break was alone.
Her cheeks were red and flushed with tears, and she blotted her face on the back of her sleeve before she made her shaky legs stand and stepped into the sunlight, face as serious as she could manage with her overabundance of tears. "Are you here to kill me again, Mr. Break?"
She looked nothing like Emily Sinclair. Sounded nothing like her. There wasn't a single speck of resemblance between the two. Still, he couldn't help but see the little blonde girl standing in front of him.
Are you here to kill me again?
And to think, he'd really believed that he'd changed.
He fixed his smile and knelt in front of her, leaving a good few metres in between them. In case she wanted to run.
"Of course not," he said. He didn't say that it was Machi who had killed her, that he hadn't done it. Break hadn't stopped him. It was enough. He held the teddy bear at arms length, offering it to her. "This was yours, wasn't it?"
For a moment Nina just watched him, sniffling and trying to hold her tears back. Adults didn't cry, and she was all grown up now, so she shouldn't cry either. Gale hadn't cried, even though it hurt. So she didn't have any right at all to cry like a little baby.
She stepped forward, accepting the bear and then taking a cautious step back, face pressing into the soft fur briefly.
"thank you." Her voice was tiny, muffled by the plush fabric, and she wasn't looking at him. "Why are you here then, Mr. Break?"
"It's a bit terrible, waking up alone in a strange place."
Some of the cheer had returned to his voice and he took a cookie from the plate, taking a few savage bites out of it and speaking with his mouth full.
"But I haven't seen Nanaki around, or Mr. Chaos." Not since that time in the greenhouse, and he wasn't even sure that had been real. "And besides, what am I going to do with a teddy bear? Emily didn't like him, so he had to go. Breakfast?" he repeated, offering the plate of cookies now.
He wasn't sure why he was here, to be honest. It wasn't as if he could make things right again. It wasn't as if he expected forgiveness, or even wanted it. Nothing would change the past. If he'd learned anything at all from the first time, it was that.
