The smell of blood filled the air, flooding poor Chopper's sensitive nose as Minsc leapt into battle. He couldn't complain though - Minsc was doing a fantastic job of taking care of the monsters while staying unscathed. He himself stayed back, close to Anna. In part it was because the air was more breathable further from the fight, but in part it was also to protect her. She was his patient, yes - but after saving him from a near certain confrontation with said large man currently cleaving monsters in twain, the tiny deer had decided to take it upon himself to look after her ( ... )

Anna had followed agreeably enough at the little party's back, though being at the rear made her feel uncomfortably exposed to any dangers that might creep up on them.... She supposed it made sense, though. After all, even if she was injured, she had her sorcery, right? She could protect them from the back. It was odd to be thought of as a witch, but she had accepted the term easily enough--she actually kind of liked it. So many people equated witches with bitches with shrews with women who held their own counsel and tried to exercise power and independence of their own. They were smart, sensible, strong, dangerous women, and that was their magic, even if they couldn't cast spells at all. It was nice to reclaim that word.... She was a witch, dammit, and she was proud of it. She'd make it work for her in this crazy world she'd been thrown into ( ... )

The commotion outside would have been enough to make Machi drop what he was doing, but it was that voice--that voice--that made him do what he did next. He knew it wasn't her--that was abundantly clear, as Machi knew no voice better than hers (no one knew her voice as well as he did)--but that strong, clear singing, even a little out of control... it had been so long since he'd heard singing like that that he reacted without thinking, grabbing hold of the door to stick his head outside, which he did out of instinct and a wild, surging emotion that might have been something like hope. (Or perhaps it was desperation--he was so lost now, without her and without even the sound of the piano to guide him.) He had hold of the gun--the gun he couldn't fire, the gun that no matter how hard he tried he couldn't shoot--but it was honestly an instinctively driven reaction, one done without thinking about complete consequences, not that anything he knew made sense any more. As far as he was concerned, looking outside was about as safe as staying ( ... )

It was nice that the witch-woman was handling his bow, as Minsc might have forgotten to pick it up in the wake of all the bloodshed. That, and he might need it later, if he was going to keep fighting like this. Normally, he was good at forced marches and bloody battles on minimal hour's sleep, but even a ranger's constitution had its limits ( ... )

As the smoldering monster corpse fell to the ground, Chopper's mind blanked. How had it snuck up on them? How had he failed to notice? Had he failed in his self appointed job already? How did she sing it to death? What good was a doctor that couldn't look after a patient? Wasn't he going to be a real man? Fear, doubt, questions, they all swirled about in the tiny deer's head until Minsc's voice snapped him from his stupor. He couldn't stand there all day feeling bad about himself - they were still in a hallway with monsters, and she still needed help ( ... )
