Lu had been coming to the kitchen to get...

Well, it was a bit late in the afternoon to consider it breakfast, wasn't it? But she'd slept since she ate last so... What she wouldn't give for a normal day-night cycle, things make sense then. She sighed faintly, blowing at her hair.

She was so tired today, and Seph seemed to be feeling it as well. She'd had to rouse him to eat and he'd fallen asleep half though, only to wake and fuss at her, confused.

She didn't like it. It felt like being sedated, and you only sedated test subjects when you were going to do something to them. She'd rather not find out what that was. Her arms closed protectively around her son.

The door to the kitchen swung open easily under her hand and she blinked at the mess. "What in the world is all of this?" The question was directed at the rather cheerful man sitting on the counter, eyes wide.

Break had been prepared to greet her, all wide smile and floppy sleeves, but his train of thought stuttered at the baby in her arms. A baby? Here? She couldn't be serious. That wasn't possible. How had she-- how had it--

Oh, but he ought to reply.

"It's a proper meal," he explained, waving a tin of butterscotch candies at her. "There's enough to share, if you're hungry."

She'd have to find a place to sit, of course. He slipped off the counter and began shuffling the food around, trying to clear one of the chairs. Normally he'd consider it someone else's problem, but this woman was carrying a baby; he wasn't about to make her set it down in a bowl of treacle while she moved things, and he certainly wasn't going to take it.

Lu would have told Break that she had come about possession of an infant through the normal channels, including childbirth with herself as the attending physician. But as the question was not asked, she made no effort to explain her son, only smiled in polite gratitude as she moved for the chair. “Thank you, sir. That is very kind of you. It looks like quite a bit of food for only one meal, and even more so for only one person.” Most of the food was recognizable, which was better than some of the things she had seen her fellow prisoners eating. “Has it been some time since you ate, Mr…?”

She let the question hang in the air, settling into the vacated chair and unwrapping Seph to lay him on her lap, automatically checking his breathing and pulse rate. He was simply deeply asleep, chest rising and falling softly. “I’m Lucrecia, or... I suppose, Doctor Crescent, if you would rather. Are you all by yourself here?”

"BREAK!" Cried Ciel, almost as if he was answering Lu's question, as he dashed into the Kitchen from the dining room, nearly sliding and falling on the plates.

Looking frazzled an pointing to the door he stuttered, "T-there are things out there!"

He looked around the kitchen confused as he realized the state it was in. "Is... Is it normal for kitchens to be this messy? I am pretty sure Sebastian would never let anything in the mansion get this filthy. But how can you be eating with those things out there?"

It was quite all right. Break may be startled by the baby, but that didn't mean he wanted to hear about the great miracle of life. There were limits to even his curiosity, and childbirth was definitely beyond them. He gave a light laugh at her comments on the food-- he was capable of eating much more than his slender frame let on, but this was definitely beyond him. It was just difficult to get the kitchen to produce things in tiny portions. But before he got a chance to answer, Ciel came skidding in, looking as gentlemanly and noble as a charging rhino. Ah, so that's where he'd gotten off to. Well, that saved him a bit of trouble.

"Of course there are things out there." He restrained his impulse to make fun of Ciel immediately; excessive nonchalance could be so much more infuriating ( ... )
