Doumeki saw Break tense out of the corner of his eye, and then a moment later Watanuki was brushing past him, calling for Eva, and the pieces fell together in his head

Break was alarmed at first. Watanuki had hardly been stable since her death, jumping at shadows, falling into long silences in the middle of conversations, living on the verge of a breakdown, but he'd never been like this. Never fallen prey to wishful thinking, never been quite so obsessed with Eva that he'd see her face in the monsters of the house. He stepped forward to stop Watanuki. He couldn't undo the damage that had been done, but he could get rid of the spectre before it did any more--

But he didn't. The shadow wasn't attacking or even trying to touch him. Even when Watanuki reached out to it, it only stood calm and still and accepted the embrace. Then it produced the note and everything fell together. It was Eva. She belonged to the house, but there was something of her left, she was still conscious enough to

"Eva..." The word was a tiny chant, a prayer of a supplicant to god, a plea to whatever cruel master might be listening to grant him just a few more moments with the child he could see flitting around the edges of the monster she'd be forced to become. The letter was accepted without looking at it, tucked away without a thought, hands returning to the child. "Eva, please, stay. Please let me help you." And then, small, barely more than a whisper muffled against the shadow. "Don't go

The shadow hesitated at the door for a moment, trembling at the threshold as Watanuki spoke. Maybe it left, maybe it was pulled away--but either way, the moment was lost soon after. It was gone with a silent rush, a liquid-shimmer trick of the light that left emptiness where only nearly-nothing had been standing before. Even opening the door to look out after it would show nothing--as though it had been nothing more than the tattered scraps of consciousness and willpower left remaining to it that had allowed it to exist and come to them at all.

It left behind nothing but its missive, the note Watanuki had given no attention to at all before tucking it away. An unreadable message written in indecipherable text, yet one more distortion of the house.
