Watanuki had been gathering supplies for the inevitable nightfall all day, chatting comfortably with Emil and enjoying the presence of another person. They had been after more blankets, filling the room with as much as they could scrounge from the linen closets.

He startled at the sound of running footsteps, noticing only absently the appearance of the glowing orbs.

Who had managed to rouse the ghosts this early on in the night?

He glanced at Emil, questioning.

Luffy bristled suddenly, fur sticking in every direction as he growled at the stairs. Whatever was coming, he didn't want it anywhere near Watanuki.

He didn't recognize the child coming around the corner, having never seen him before, but he did recognize the little girl whimpering in pain in his arms. "Eva!"

The fox snarled, trying to get between Watanuki and the children. The boy was fine, but the girl in his arms was BAD.

Emil felt a jolt of shock and fear, both his own and not. "Eva?" He knew that name. That was--

"Eva!"

He saw the other two coming after Watanuki did, and found that he recognized them both: Alphonse, whom he knew from the night the house had disappeared, and Eva, whom he'd met when the second house appeared, both of them connected by the same red thread that linked Emil to someone else right now. Eva looked horrible, in a way nobody human should have to. It was almost painful to look, but she was going to need help and that wasn't going to happen if everyone was afraid ( ... )

Break didn't know the boy, and he didn't recognize Eva immediately; he had never seen her, after all. So his first reaction when Al screaming around a corner with a dying girl and a healthy dose of hysterics was just as much curiosity as it was concern, and a large part of that concern was for himself and his own, not for the girl. She looked... diseased. There was nothing natural about the way her skin almost bubbled with pus and filth. And as much as he'd love to help her out for the purposes of goodness and light and all that beautiful nonsense, he also knew that dying here was impermanent and he had no desire to rot away or allow his companions to do so, if only because he would be stuck with them. But he did wonder how this had happened; of all the horrible things the house had done, he'd never seen anything quite like this before. So his curiosity already had him hovering on the edge, and when Watanuki and Emil identified the girl, it was enough to convince him to help ( ... )

There was little more Eva could do than sob in Alphonse's arms, the terrified, somewhat-hysterical noises that accompanied the tears short and sharp and hovering just south of turning into outright screaming. Her eyes were wide and horrified, magnified by the tears that traced shining paths down her cheeks, impossibly green; she was half-blinded by them, but caught sight of Break, Emil, and Watanuki regardless, trembling almost convulsively in Al's arms as she reached a hand towards them.

The sickly, squelching sound of torn flesh was even louder here than it had been, only moments ago. A broad hand-shaped patch of ragged, bloody tissue was stuck to Al's coat, dripping and trailing strings of fat and muscle. It looked like her palm had ripped away entirely, judging from the quivering tendons and pale flashes of bone that could be glimpsed on the outstretched hand.

Hurtshurtshurtshurtshurtshurtshurtshurts....If this was a sickness, it must surely be a supernatural one--not only to progress so damnably quickly, but to affect her ( ... )

Quatre stopped dead behind Break when he saw what was happening, gaping silently at the poor woman in front of him. What was happening to her? Was it some kind of disease or was she one of the horrible monsters that only appeared at night? Something different? Who knew what she had been through?

It was Break's decisiveness that spurred him into action. He fought down his gag reflex and stepped toward Alphonse, dropping the staff he carried to the ground. "What can I do?" He was completely out of his element in this kind of situation, but that didn't mean he couldn't make himself useful. It just meant that he needed guidance first.
