Yukimi hadn't been dreaming at all. In fact, he hadn't even been sleeping. He knew he didn't have a concrete deadline for the newsletter, but somehow that made him want to work on it more than a million visions of menacing editors ever had. Maybe all that crap about self-motivation actually had a grain of truth to it? Nah, it was still idealistic bullshit. But he wanted to work fast before he forgot details, or lost his notes, or just lost this masochistic streak that made him actually want to do this. So he'd been burning the hypothetical midnight oil and was finally at the point of making the last edits on his draft. The idea was that if he could get those done before morning, he could leave the final product with Ace or Eva to copy while he slept.

So he was fully aware that something was going on with Machi-- well, probably with Machi because last time he checked he didn't have a dead ghost fetish-- but he could ignore it, and the desk provided enough privacy that it wasn't awkward. He maybe should talk to Machi about it later; ( ... )

Machi didn't move. He didn't respond, either, lying absolutely still, his breathing slow and even as he forcibly regulated it to appear as if he were asleep. He ignored Ace completely--he knew Yukimi was in the room, knew he was here, but he didn't know if he could feel it, hoped he couldn't, hoping for all of this to just go away and blow over so they would leave him alone and leave him in the warmth and weight and darkness of his bundled nest. His mind felt sick, slightly panicked, and a knot pulled tightly in his stomach.

He was unaware of Ace's connection or he would have tamped down on it that much harder, as much as he could, anyway--he didn't know why he couldn't, not quite, not with that constant sensation, that needing tugging at him where he couldn't control, and he tried not to press into further, remaining absolutely still under the covers save for his breathing. He wanted them to go away, to leave him alone and let him... he couldn't deal with this like this. He... he didn't know what was wrong with him... but now was ( ... )

Machi's panic was like acid in his brain, preventing him from dozing back up, forcing his brain to wake up and focus on the kid. It mingled unpleasantly with the other emotion, the one he couldn't identify, leaving him with the odd sensation of having bit into something wonderfully sweet and found it stuffed with sour milk ( ... )

A nightmare? Yukimi made a soft noise somewhere between a snort and a chuckle. No way did Ace believe that, if he really had a connection with Machi. But if this was Ace's way of being nice, then he wasn't about to call him out on it or anything. Even if he wanted to, it'd only make things really fucking awkward. But as nice as Ace's effort was, Yukimi had different ideas. He stretched and got up, cracking his neck one way and then the other.

"Alllright. Machi, if you're okay I think I'm headed down to the kitchen for a minute. I'm about out of tea, and that just isn't gonna fly when I'm working on a deadline." --which he wasn't, technically, but if he didn't convince himself he was then he'd never get anything done. He glanced down at Ace, folding his arms across his chest. "Ace, do wanna come with me?"

Those were his words, but his eyes said something a bit different. They said 'you're coming with me or I'm punching you out and then your unconscious body is coming with me.' Ace could be pretty overbearing, and what Machi needed ( ... )
