It never came.

Instead, there was a blinding flash of light and a glow of power before spikes--dozens of hard, gigantic, violent spikes--thrust up from the floor, translucent and frigid and cold.

Ice.

A few monsters were skewered outright, but most of them were simply trapped, frozen to the ground, their limbs or bodies caught in the sudden onslaught of ice. It was followed immediately by gunfire, and a nurse standing over Watanuki suddenly all but exploded, it's head riddled by not one but two bullets, spattering the adolescent with blood and brain matter as it slumped, toppling to hit the ground like a seck of cement while two of the crawling monsters dropped, lifeless, to the floor, their limbs splayed grotesquely.

It had factored into Vincent's decision to save him, but he hadn't taken the time to assess the full weight of the damage--and it was a great deal of damage. He said nothing for several seconds, simply staring at Watanuki--then, without warning, seized Watanuki by the right arm with his claw, opening the closest door and pulling him inside, his gun still readied. There was a beat of hesitation while he checked the threat level of their new surroundings before he let go of Watanuki and slammed the door shut behind them ( ... )

Watanuki almost resisted the grab, but the vampire had just saved his life. He was unlikely to kill him without asking something ( ... )

Vincent listened, standing nearby while Watanuki spoke, waiting until the teen was finished--he was quiet, and entirely passive, which Vincent actually found slightly irritating, if at least understandable, and which might very well have influenced the tone of his answer ( ... )
