Break had little standards for the company he kept-- he wasn't prone to forming attachments and bad company offered amusement nearly as valuable as the benefits of good company-- but he certainly didn't object to Donovan's presence either. Though Break wasn't sure how he felt about this culture of his. Break enjoyed the arts as much as the next man, but in his mind there was a difference between that sort of thing and culture. Patrons of the arts enjoyed a good play or a well-crafted painting. Patrons of culture enjoyed foul wine that cost too much, sticking their noses up at men who still carried dolls and candies, and being verbose for verbosity's sake.

"It is, but I'm not surprised, considering what they've done with the rest of the house. They seem to enjoy wasting resources. And the library-- such a beautiful library, with such a poor selection of books! I've never seen anything like it." Not that he could enjoy them these days, but the abundance of harlequin romances and the complete lack of anything useful had annoyed him a ( ... )

Of course, Donovan was not spurning this Xerxes in any way. In fact, he was quickly coming to the decision that he was quite probably the most fulfilling company he had had since his spontaneous revival. Break raised his eyebrows. Over the years? The oldest residents he'd met had been here for a year or so. That wasn't to say it was impossible, but given that he had just encountered (and mangled) one of the ghosts, it seemed more likely that this man was a similar breed of undead. But Break wouldn't hold that against him. They were all headed in that direction eventually-- though he hoped to end with more of the peaceful death and less of the tortured soul and haunting bit ( ... )

It was impossible for Donovan to not have noticed the surprised expression, being quite keen on these things, but it honestly didn't matter to him, being the least of his concerns. It was only natural, after all, and he wasn't particularly worried either way - the man could feel however he did, it made little difference to the ghost and to his enjoyment of the situation; which is what he was out for, after all.

"Oh, but of course!" he agreed with Xerxes's sentiments whole heartedly, "It's much preferred to have a wider variety, and to take an interest in a wider variety of things." He did prefer the arts, but he was far from willing to let a good book of any sort slip past him. "And you are surely right; I've come to expect little in the form of accommodations from the proprietors of the house," he finished with a wry, ironic sort of smile on his lips. Of course, if nothing else, they had steady housing, down in the basement ( ... )
