The silent phantasm injected the boy with a syringe near his temple--soon Fletcher's head would be numb, and they could begin. Until that time, however, they needed to prepare. The hat, if it could be called that, was removed and set aside, out of Fletcher's line of vision. His hair was shaved in methodical, perfectly straight lines, fluffy blond hair falling to the ground.

The other phantasm ignored this. "And why are you here?"

Finally, the phantasm at Fletcher's head began to cut. At first it was just with a scalpel, peeling the skin back carefully. Another appeared silently to take care of the blood. They worked their way around Fletcher's head--all the boy would feel was pressure.

"No," the other phantasm said, stepping forward to better observe the operation. "We do not want you here."

There was another machine--a sort of small chainsaw, and when it was turned on it whirred like a dentist's drill as they cut through Fletcher's skull, exposing the brain that it protected. They set the cap of his skull down on a small metal table, this time within Fletcher's line of sight.

"No." The phantasm speaking, satisfied, left.

If the phantasms noticed Fletcher's growing distress culminating in unconsciousness, they showed no signs of caring. They continued their work on his brain, not cutting but searching through it nonetheless, finding his memories and--with a snip not unlike cutting up the brain itself--removing from it the one person it seemed the boy cared about most: his brother.

It would be as if he'd grown up an only child.

Once that was done, they sewed his skull back onto his head, leaving a thin scar that ran all around. This was covered with his hat. And then, well, they were done with him. One phantasm would take him back to the island, where he would wake up.

On to the next, then.
