It was so hard to believe that it was all over. It was hard to realize that everything was normal again. It was hard to adapt to everyday life after all that had happened, but somehow Naoto Shirogane was managing. School was school, work was work, life was life, but for once all of it was enjoyable. She’d faced her demons and had come out on top, she’d helped to save the world, and finally, finally, she felt good about who she was. She didn’t have to hide from herself, from the world, anymore ( ... )

Eventually he'd decided he couldn't stand in the doorway the whole time and had ventured uncertainly forward, trying to bite back the fear as he realized just how creepy this place was. If this was something someone had created, what sort of mind did they have?

As a result, when he heard something land behind him, he jumped, turned, and reeled back in one confused motion, and ended up falling over again.

"W-who's there?"

Where was she? The style of this home, for it was at the least obvious that she was indeed in a house of some sort, was western and certainly not something she was prone to seeing in Japan. Especially not in Inaba. It was tempting to believe that perhaps she had somehow managed to fall into a TV somewhere, but she had only been walking into the entrance to Junes, there were no TVs there and she had tripped backwards. So unless someone had been behind her with a conveniently placed TV it was incredibly unlikely that she had fallen into one.

How did she get here then? Was this the TV world? It had looked so wonderful the last time she had seen it, surely this place could not be part of a world such as that? At least not anymore. Not to mention she had no idea who, if anyone was here. Perhaps she had been kidnapped? Was she alone? Was there anyone else here?

"W-who's there?"The voice was distinct and familiar and relief swept over her at once. Not only was she not by herself, but she most certainly knew who it was ( ... )

"Naoto!" Kanji couldn't help but be relieved, knowing that he wasn't alone in--whatever this place was. He stood up once more. "Do you know where we are?"

He cast another uncertain look into the dark expanse of house, waiting as if expecting something to jump out at him before turning back to Naoto. He didn't have a weapon on him--he thought that sort of thing was over with--but maybe he could find something in here.

He was uneasy with his back to such a wide area, and wondered if that had something to do with all the fighting he'd done in the TV world but didn't really think on it all that hard, simply moved so his back was facing a wall.

Honestly in a darkness as encompassing such as this, it was a slight miracle that Naoto was able to discern that she was in a house at all, let alone recognize the style. She took in her surroundings waiting a moment as she tried to glean as much information as she could before giving Kanji any sort of response.

The most glaring thing was that it was black as pitch inside the house and only moments before she had been squinting her eyes from the sun. It was raining outside, but the distinct pitter-patter of the rain outside was almost completely drowned out by the sounds of...what was that? Construction? Certainly no one was building anything in Inaba right now and if they were it would never be done at night and especially not in the rain ( ... )

Kanji nodded, then fished around in his pocket for a familiar pair of sunglasses. He hadn't quite lost the habit of carrying them around, and he decided to try them on and see if that made it any easier to see. Nothing. Eyebrows furrowing, he took them off again.

"Well if this isn't the TV then..." he trailed off, unable to make any conclusions. He wasn't Naoto or Seta. "Or is it the TV? Did it change again?"

That idea made him nervous. Were they the only ones here?

"W-wait, I'll do it," Kanji said. He'd remained remarkably still and silent until that moment, unable to find words to express the particular shade of revulsion he was feeling. He told himself he was picking the chair up so Naoto wouldn't have to, because the chair was kind of heavy. Really, though, he--part of him had to see. And so up it went.

He dropped the chair soon after, although it fell harmlessly to one side and uncovered the crushed remains. Like a bug, it was like a--like a big bug, crushed. But it had looked humanshaped, and it still did, a little, and was that blood all over the floor and--and--

He felt himself gag once and fall back onto the ground, away from the--thing.

Naoto felt a twinge of annoyance at Kanji's words, frowning indignantly and refusing to let go of the chair as she spoke. "I'm perfectly capable of picking up a chair. There's no need to ( ... )

Kanji was too busy gaping and feeling vaguely nauseous to be of any help to Naoto, though he doubted even if he had been perfectly fine if he would have been able to do much of anything. It occurred to him, when she leaned down to touch the--stuff--that there was no way that was sanitary, but by then he'd been almost entranced by the--the corpse--and so he didn't say anything.

He'd killed that thing. It wasn't human, but it--it looked human, and he killed it. He didn't really do much until Naoto addressed him, when he looked up at her as if he'd only now realized she was still there.

"U-um." No, not really.

Naoto was certainly astute enough to realize that 'u-um' did NOT mean he was ok. She kept her hand outstretched and sort of beckoned for him to take it while offering him a solemn smile.

"It's ok, Kanji. You were only defending yourself. Come on, we must be on our way."

Unfortunately Naoto was not the best at comforting people. Yosuke had once said that she had a tin ear to others' emotions and though since then she had become much more adept at dealing with hers and those of others, the right words for this kind of situation failed her. What was she to tell him? That it was a natural reaction for him to be sickened by what had just occured? No, that was not the way to go about this.

Okay, servant area, he could handle that. ...Unless those shadows were the servants. Still, he didn't see anything out of the ordinary so far. Maybe these doors opened? "Alright, let's look."

He walked to the nearest door and tugged it open. The first thing he saw was the strangely decorated room: wood chippings, caged walls, what appeared to be a giant water bottle like for keeping rodents--what sort of place had a room like this?

"Hey Naoto, get a load of this room."

Naoto took the opposite side, carefully opening the door. The room was normal at first glance. The floor was carpeted, the walls were painted, the furnishings seemed neat and well kept, not exactly the nicest pieces, but they certainly would be able to serve their function. Nothing was amiss here except for the overpowering scent of perfume that Naoto choked on when she opened the door.

She peeked her head inside long enough to see that there was no other door and then quickly ducked out again before the scent made her sick. She had never been one to tolerate things such as potpourri.

Naoto crossed the hall, peering around Kanji and into the room. "This is certainly peculiar..." The room was strange to say the least. It could serve no real purpose except to keep exceptionally large rodents happy. It was not a space most people would feel comfortable staying in for a large period of time.

Indeed, Naoto could only wonder the same thing, what kind of place would have a room like this?

Kanji took an uncertain step into the strange room, and when nothing jumped out at him, he took another step. It didn't seem like there was much inside--and everything was barred up anyway. With a sigh, he walked back out.

"This house is definitely not normal," he said, and moved to the next room.

This one looked normal. Extremely clean, but otherwise normal. No way out, though.

Once again crossing the hall she opened the next door. It was by far the filthiest bedroom she had ever seen - rumpled sheets, stains of questionable origins and nature seeped into the carpet, and trash was overflowing in the corners and from under the bed. Despite the mess it was...relatively normal and she closed the door and continued on ( ... )
