Terrifying thing #1
I am trying to get one of my editors (he is lovely and encourages me to do strange things) to let me review the new Sweet Valley book, Sweet Valley Confidential. Amazon's "customers who bought this also bought" section lists one of the later Sweet Valley High books. It is titled "What Jessica Wants". This is what one of the Read more... )

Hey you! :) I've been meaning to actually E-mail you for ages and ... haven't because I am rubbish at that sort of thing. So hello!

... yeah, I think for the sake of my sanity, I shall pretend that the reviewer of that Sweet Valley book was being ironic. Or mocking. Or something. Don't judge me, I need my denial.

I've been planning to email you too! I recently found your sister on facebook and it occurred to me that I didn't know where you were or what you were doing - for the first time in a couple of decades!

For the sake of my sanity I often try to pretend that *I* was being ironic during my Sweet Valley phase. It doesn't always work.

Good to be back! Though trying to catch up on a year's worth of missed updates is a terrifying thought.

I thought the whole point of SVH was that they were all sociopaths. Or am I remembering it wrong?

You are not remembering it wrong. Jessica was admittedly more likely to plot/scheme/cause death and mayhem than the others, but no one came out of the series too well.

Welcome back! I'm also an inconsistent LJ-er. But I try.

Good luck with the SVH review.

Jessica is not manipulative and sociopathic enough. The youth of today terrify me.

I read maybe one or two of them when I was a kid, but...wasn't that utterly what Jessica was about? She was manipulative (ok, not sociopathic) and sexually aware, and Elizabeth was sweet and virginal. And there was this one where Elizabeth hit her head and started acting like Jessica, who was pissed off at being out-Jessica'd by her own twin!

That was the idea - though Elizabeth pulled some pretty terrible stunts even when she hadn't been hit on the head. Also while the series laughed a lot of it off, Jessica did some genuinely horrific things! I'm just a bit alarmed that anyone would think the problem was that these characters were *insufficiently* terrible!
