It's a day like any other. She's woozy, from the moment she gets out of bed. Sluggish and a bit disoriented, but this far into the home-stretch, and she isn't expecting any different. Since the day that Emmy was born, Lily thinks that this is the first time that she's ever been glad not to be carrying one of her babies in her arms. She sees Sarah, recognises the blood on her hands. It's a surprising turn of speed for a woman Lily's age.

"It's okay, Sarah," she says, reaching out for her. "It's going to be okay."

Lily. Oh, thank God, Lily. She hardly has it in her to be relieved, but she isn't alone, so that's something.

"No. No, something's wrong," she insists, staring down at the bloodied hand in front of her, but it wasn't just the blood. She knows. There's something wrong. This isn't right. The pain crashing into her isn't what she felt with Jessica. This isn't labor, this is something else.

"It's okay," says Lily again, all firm professionalism, guiding Sarah towards the clinic without hurrying her; they'll figure out the blood next to her. "I need you to get to the clinic, and I'm going to get you settled, and then I'm going to go get someone who can help."

Jesus, she hopes he's home.

"Where's Adam? I need Adam," she says, and she's perfectly aware of how she sounds, the panic in her voice and the desperation, and later she might be angry at herself for it, but she's suddenly and immediately terrified. So much blood. How can she possibly be in her right mind?
