It's sort of self preservation thing. He's always slept so lightly. He opens his eyes, looking up at her, and then he realises that his eyes are open and he still can't see.

He sits up, grasping for her in the dark.

"Island playing silly buggers again?"

She shushes him, sharply but still with a thread of gentleness to it. Gentleness that's quickly fading away. Her eyes are adjusting now, as much as they will. She can make out shapes in the dark, flat and lifeless, but nothing more.

Tipping her head to the side, she listens.

When she shushed him, he went quiet, lifting his head and looking around them, trying to make out where they were. Automatically, he reached out for her, hand on her thigh, squeezing gently.

"I've been here before," she says in a low voice, in case it wasn't obvious before. The hand on her is anchoring. Already, something in her is threatening to drift away, shut down completely, but he's there, pulling her back to him. Always.
