I agree with most of this, which is why I won't be re-watching the finale anytime soon. But I don't think we were ever supposed to be rooting for Tyrol to choke Tori. If we were, I call shenanigans. I think it's become incredibly clear that Chief has just as much trouble controlling his emotions as the Eights, if not more, and that moment (for me at least; I haven't been listening to whatever the series producers themselves have been saying) was about a rather human inability to overlook something for the sake of the future of the universe. I'm not sure that makes it any better, because then we're asking Chief to forgive the murder of his wife, but as much as I disliked Tori for being a one-dimensional prop of a character, I don't think we were meant to root for Chief having his revenge on her. I think the point is that, despite being these mythical, glowing figures in the Opera House, the final five hadn't really transcended anything. They weren't special, they were just five people, and just as capable of ruining the entire ( ... )

Just offering a different view: I think we were supposed to be rooting for Tyrol. Full disclosure: I was. I don't even like Tyrol, but I think the producers ADORE him, based not only on the way he's portrayed the series (and the finale--he gets to live and he gets to do it on exactly his own terms), but on the way they talk about him in the specials (an "everyman," "blue collar," etc.). I think they really wanted us to want him to finally take revenge on this person who murdered his wife (who he beat the shit out of and didn't even like that much to begin with), and I admit to completely buying into that.

I was angry about the lone Indian character being made evil like that, but for some reason, my crazy-ass "justice for Cally!" blinded me to it at that moment. I was rooting for him. I wish I hadn't been.

That's true... I'd let myself forget about the "everyman" stuff, mostly because everything that came after New Caprica made me dislike him more and more.

I would have found the revenge a lot more believable if it had seemed like he really cared. If he'd done any real mourning for Cally that wasn't wrapped up in his Cylon identity crisis. Maybe he had just sublimated a lot of it, and it all came back when he saw that Tori had killed her... but that's putting more faith in the writers than I want to. Especially since Tyrol so conveniently completely forgot about his child when he found out it wasn't his. He seemed like he'd just gone about intentionally unburdening himself of his family, and somehow we're supposed to remember that he used to be he sort of guy who'd put himself on the line to save a woman he loved (and back then, it was a Sharon anyway ( ... )

I hear this! If there was going to be justice for Cally's murder, there are lots of people who cared about her a lot more than Tyrol who could have been behind it. (And it could have been done without the big white guy throttling the Indian woman, naturally. Or, hey, they could have not made the lone Indian the Baddie of the final five to begin with. *sigh*) If the writers were trying to do something more complex with his character, I'm with you--they failed.

YES to Roslin. I was so... blah. I haven't been watching since mid-season 3 because it was just not the show I signed up for anymore.

The mystical destiny bullshit definitely took over the show in bad ways. And they just do not know how to handle Roslin's awesome.
