Thoughts about stuff

Okay, this whole "War on Boys" thing has been bothering me a bit. Take this article for example. But I haven't really been able to quite put my finger on all the reasons why.

This, on the other hand, is a good rebuttal to the whole shebang, which helps solidify all the reasons for the odd feelings I get about the whole thing ( Read more... )

feminism, hmmm....

So do I. So do I. I especially like how the author of the first article uses mostly anecdotal evidence, while the second actually uses statistics to back up his point.

This whole thing pisses me off because first, it assumes that girls are biologically enamored to act one way and boys are biologically enamored to act another. Yes, there are vague hormone differences. But yes too, a lot of it has to do with socialization even before these boys or girls get into school.

(Not to mention that when boys are in college classrooms they still dominate the conversation - I've heard many professors say that this does happen. Unless, of course, I'm in the class which means I'm arguing with them :P)

I just don't understand this entire argument. Victorian English universities, for both men AND women, were very "feminized" and a lot of men were still getting educations. A lot more men than women. (In retrospect a lot of critics read a lot of those men & women as gay, but whatever. Even if some of them were obviously not ALL of them were.)

Yeah, the biology thing bothers me a lot. Like, boys are incapable of sitting in class and actually being, you know, polite about it, because they're hardwired differently. Or something.

Also, the fact that a lot of this stuff is a class and race issue really pisses me off, because then they're just making it a gender issue simply because feminism bothers them and they can't read statistics.

But you can't pretend that social class is biological! :) (Well, people used to try, but I think they've learned better.)

Well, if they realized it was just class, they'd probably decide to not care, because dude, it's not their problem that lower class boys don't want to go to college, etc.
