Computer geek rambles

I love Linux a lot. Like crazy.

It's a lot of work to maintain and occasionally really frustrating, but I think that's the joy in it. It's challenging and rewarding in equal measures, though, and it's perfect for a big computer nerd like me.

The command line kicks so much ass, too. ubuntu is pretty damn awesome.

my nerdiness pwns you, linux

what does it mean that i can identify the author of most LJ posts by the post itself?

but yeah, linux is pretty awesome.

i'm a big fan of my setup right now. old computer monitors had light text on a dark background for the same reason that books have dark text on a light background: it's how the material works. pigment is subtractive, and so regular ink will make regular paper darker but not lighter. on the other hand, light is additive, and so it works the opposite way.

if you want to have white-on-black on paper, then you have to dye the entire paper black /except/ for the text, and similarly, if you want to have black-on-white on a computer screen, you have to light up the entire screen except for the text.

personally, i think that's stupid. so right now, all non-selected text -- in both console and GUI apps -- is lighter than the background.it makes some webpages look pretty weird, but that's a price i'm willing to pay. for a desktop that is (imho) extremely cool.

I am the only person on your friendslist who writes really nerdy posts about Linux and abuses the word "awesome"? That's crazy talk!

And yeah, I love the weirdly cool things you can customize in Linux. It's quite awesome. (Dammit! I did it again!)

No, but you're the only person with your writing style who does.

I'm still so very much a wimpy Mac user... with OS X I get BSD (oh god I reflexively typed that as BSG) command line goodness, and the slick Aqua GUI, and relatively low maintainence.

also, no other OS has a suitable Quicksilver replacement, and Quicksilver is practically a part of my brain at this point.

but Linux has been pretty decent to me as a n00b server admin.

Yeah, well, I think I kind of like the frustration. It builds character. :P

And I'm sure you'll get used to it, eventually.
