And it's even better that they're best friends. Reminds me of a scene in No Man's Land when Batman's in Gotham looking at a garden and Superman flies up to see him since he hasn't taken off that persona in a long while. And they talk about their differences. Batman sees Superman as a boy scout. ;)

Oh, totally. I didn't really get into their relationship, because I just wanted to go for the general parallels (that'd probably be another post, maybe).

And I loved No Man's Land in general (it hits that particular post-apocalyptic world kink I have), and that's probably my favorite single issue in the entire thing.

Well, movie!Gotham was filmed in Chicago, so obviously, they share some similarities, but at the very least, comic!Gotham is on the East coast, and is basically an island city, which I think they were getting at in the movie too.

And I always loved Superman, too. He's always being written off as not as cool as Batman, but I think he deserves a lot of love.

I love that you posted this. *is superhero geek* I've never quite thought about it that way, and it's given me some food for thought...

Some of these I can't take credit for, but I heard them so long ago that I can't remember where I heard them. I especially love (but cannot take credit for) the first two, because they fit just so damn well.

But yeah, I think their parallelism is quite delicious in so many ways.

And yay! For I am a superhero geek myself.

I always thought it was implied that Gotham = NYC, and Metropolis = Chicago.

In any case, I've always enjoyed the tension between Superman and Batman, esp. in The Dark Knight Returns... Superman is the Patriot Act-type reluctant goody-two-shoes hero who swallows his pride for the sake of duty, and uses his alien brawn instead of his brains; Batman is the hard-edged renegade fighting the system with nothing but determination and human cunning.

That, I think, is really the fundamental difference between Superman and Batman: Superman is well-nigh omnipotent (as Gaiman's [I think so] essay in Wired on him noted, Superman's true enemies are not criminals, but natural disasters) , whereas Batman is at heart a detective, a tough gumshoe looking for justice in the night.

I used to think that too, but then I found out that for some bizarre reason, Metropolis was on the east coast, then I heard that explanation, and it just fit for me, so I'm sticking by it ( ... )
