I am quite in love with this multiple workspaces thing Linux has going for it. It means that I can separate out all my weirdnesses. Also, Linux makes it really easy for me to work on the CS lab's resources over SSH (considering that the CS lab also runs on Linux). I am very much in favor of that ( Read more... )

I never got into the whole multiple-desktops deal. Maybe it's just because Macs are so application-centric.

In general, I don't find multiple desktops that useful. That said, when you're on a relatively small monitor (1024x768) and running a number of apps which take up a lot of screen space (email, programming environment, etc.), it's nice to have what is basically alt-tab between whole predefined sets of programs.

I definitely agree that when I had a Mac, I didn't mind not having multiple desktops at all. I think that is partly because I didn't program on my Mac, and partly because Mac applications are much more screen-efficient (none of that multiple-window shit)... you can run almost any Mac program in a relatively small window, whereas most Windows/Linux programs are best run at full size. So you need more ways to cope with that.

Maybe it's just me, then. I really like spreading out my stuff, and while it never really bothered me not to have them on Windows, it's really just nifty to have them on Linux.
