She'd survived the first night, after spending it curled up next to him underneath her sleeping bag, and the first real test was waking up in the morning and getting ready to go for the day. Jack woke up slightly after dawn, with the thick fog still rolling between the redwoods, and made his way out of the tent, taking the dog with him. After he'd ( Read more... )

Brittany was still not quite used to the whole idea of camping; it was one thing to be snuggling with her boyfriend, which happened often, but falling off the air mattress reminded her where she was. And blearily, her brain started looking for her alarm, or her stereo, or her cell phone. Two of which she didn't have, and one of which didn't work.

That was when she remembered where they were. And what they were doing.

Yawning, she ran a hand through her hair to tame the bed hair, before she started to dress. She settled on jeans, a long-sleeved shirt, and a light jacket over that. Still, since she hadn't brought her makeup, she nonetheless looked sleepy and with her hair going in a couple different directions when she emerged.

"Some things never change," she commented as she walked to join him. "Like how I can't stand how you're a morning person when I just wanna sleep."

"You're just lucky I didn't wake you up when I took the dog on a walk this morning when the sun was just coming up," Jack protested, as he set the tin cup of coffee across from her and dug the milk out of the cooler so she could douse it if she wanted, and then he put the food in front of her. "Then you really would have hated me."

He clicked the burners off on the small stove and then took a seat next to her. He was also dressed appropriately, in jeans, boots, and a jacket.

It fit the situation quite well.

She grinned at him. "I'm not annoyed," she said, "I just notice. 'Cause you're almost always up and wandering around by the time I stumble out of bed. It's been that way for years."

However, like most people in the world, she was grateful for coffee and food (moreso coffee, because that would wake her up), and she ate quietly for a moment before she leaned her head lightly against his shoulder.

"It's kinda cute, to be honest, though. Always really comforting and reassuring for me. You've been my rock through my whole adult life. It's good to have a home to come to and someone who wants me there, you know?"

A small smile. "So what's the plan for today, boss?"

"I know." Jack smiled a little. "And soon enough we're gonna have our own place, and you can wake up to me making coffee every morning," he promised, seeming genuinely excited at the prospect. It showed in his smile and his eyes, as he ate and considered.

"Well," he took a sip of the coffee. "We have a few options. We can hang out here, or we can go out...it's not quite fishing weather, I think later in the week will be good for that. We need to pick up some more ice," he said. "They sell it back at the ranger station a few miles out. We could pick some up and also grab a map of the trails around the area, maybe take a hike? I'm sure some of them we can take the dog on with us."
