what a crappy day...

I'm sick, had to fly from L.A. to Detroit and then Atlanta...I feel like my head is going to explode, and I didn't get accepted by Teach for America, which I am not really that upset about...I've been thinking a lot about it lately and I'm not so sure it's for me. I'm going to apply to a master's program at my school to be a college counselor...now ( Read more... )

Oh, Dave. I am really sorry that the Teach for America thing didn't work out.

What about the Oakland Teaching Fellows thing? It's similar, and you get paid regular Oakland Salary, and benefits and everything.

I thought about that, and they have one in NYC too, but I don't think that teaching on the secondary level is what I truly have a passion for...the first thing I thought of when I found out was that I'd never pursue the credential on my own. I really want to be at the community college level, so I think this master's program is a viable option, either that or another grad program that would enable me to teach college...maybe English...either way, I wasn't devastated, so it obviously isn't what I'm supposed to be doing.

Ahhh take them anyway. if for anything else just to be able to say you have two BA's. Sorry about TFA. It's a rough program...not for eveyone...but it does break you in. Ask Wander_Lust about it. He was in TFA for a few years. Enjoy Atlanta and take care of the headache.

that's what I'm thinking too...I just don't know how many pre-reqs I'll have to take for the master's program...I'm not that upset about not getting TFA, I'm pissed cause they didn't choose me, but I'm not pissed because I have this undying passion to teach high school in a crap district...so that prolly means they made the right choice...I think I'd make a better counselor, and I was really only looking at teaching high school as a stepping stone to teaching community college...but who knows...everything happens for a reason...

My suggestion would be:

Finish those courses. It's always better to finish something when you're so close than to just leave it hanging. It looks good to employers as well, and if you do the masters and teach at the community college level, it's another area you could teach at that level. It would also provide for a backup plan.

Also, going back to finish those, gives you the opportunity to take some other credits so you can be a full time student, which if things are even remotely similar down there, you get more 'student benefits' And if you do have any prereq's for the master's program, you can always use those to fill your timetable.

yeah, it's the same...next semester will be my last one though, so if there are any pre-reqs I'll have to come back and do them post-bac, but I was looking last night and it doesn't appear that there are many, if at all. We'll see, I'm actually kinda excited, I do really like school so it'll be cool to be a student for a few more years...
