Hogwarts gate had never seemed like such an obstacle. He'd made the long walk from the Greenhouses under low light, and the tall iron bars glinted under the moon like a beacon. He looked down the road towards Hogsmeade, seeing in the distance the twinkling lights of the town. Nothing else.
He looked back towards the castle. Would Dumbledore know when he left? Maybe. Maybe it wasn't too late to run back inside and get... someone. Anyone. But Susan's letter... whoever had written him that last one had left one at Hannah's house, for Susan. And he wouldn't let Susan get hurt, not now. Not ever. Not even if he'd spent the last ten minutes fighting down vomit.
With a deep breath, he crossed the threshold, and started down the path towards the dark road.
