Culinary Woes.

Okay, I have a problem. At the end of last semester, the food science club had an Iron Chef-esque competition, which I'm sure you'll all remember me talking about, wherein groups of two had to come up with a chocolate-raspberry-mint dessert and were judged on it by the four FOSC instructors. You'll also probably remember that my partner and I ( Read more... )

Some people don't like split pea or something, either-- but if you're dealing with a variety of judges, something like the soup shots might be a good idea, because it'll allow them to say 'oh, I like that and that, but not that one so much' and it may not hurt you so badly, you know?

Yeah, that was the basic idea behind that one ^^;;;

It's a good one, I'd just watch out with the veggies-- butternut squash and split pea, especially. My house alone has two people who don't like either. XD

Interestingly, I made the particular butternut squash soup recipe I had in mind for Thanksgiving, and even someone who doesn't like butternut squash liked the soup :D

First, suspend your belief that I choose not to eat a variety of foods for a moment. In that alternate reality yet? Still not there? Need another moment? Okay. Well, if you're still not there, then maybe it will be good that I don't like a lot of foods on principle, as I am a good person to suggest things considering one judge may not like some foods. Whee.

I am going to be against soup shots on principle. I don't see how soup shots can do any soup justice, no matter what the content. I think appetizers are best described by sharable foods: something you get served a platter of but everyone has some of. This may entail finger foods or something that is stabbed with a fork (snared with chopsticks okay).

That said, I think the best-liked thing will come from something embodies all of itself. Obviously, you won't be making mozzarella sticks, but indulge the thought for a moment. You make fried, breaded mozzarella, and then the taster takes one of them, dunks it in something and then takes a bite. I think foods of this ( ... )

Hmm...I do consider the soup-shot thing a more gourmet experience, which may be a perfect reason why NOT to do it in this thing ^^;

Judging (heh) by your comment, would you consider chicken satays (chicken on a stick =P) with two-three dipping sauces a better option? I'd probably hit a peanut sauce, maybe a spicier one, and possibly a sweet option.... Does that sound more...appetizing? ^^;

NOM.

One of my three favorite sauces is peanut sauce. The other two (in no particular order) are honey mustard and Jack Daniels sauce (popular at TGI Friday's but also available in supermarkets. It is so. good.)

Anyway, yes. That sounds superbly fantastic. I would like to try it (: And by try it, I mean order lots and pay you for it. Yes yes.

Satay skewers sounds fantastic!
So when I cater events, my dad does a lot of things like skewers, risotto balls, which are little piles of risotto lightly breaded and fried. Those are fucking good. Crostini and little toasts with things on them are good. In one instance, we did pan seared filet with a red and yellow bell pepper coulis. Also! My dad and I once made mini grilled finger sandwiches, monte christos and the like. Those were really good. Oh! In the vein of shots, try spoons! I made brilliant peking duck spoon. It had the duck meat, a few scallions, and a little bit of the skin on one of those spoons you get at chinese restaurants.

The soup shots sound amazing, and if you can pull off a great butternut squash soup, you're my new best friend.
Good luck and kick ass!
