Character History: Ta-daaa! It's brief, but there's not that much to his life, even though he's the title character. :I

Personality:
Like just about everything ever in the Soul Eater canon, Soul's life before the timeline of the main story isn't really all that fleshed out. He played piano at home but supposedly quit, and has an older brother named Wes who plays the violin. Recent chapters have suggested Soul has an underlying inferiority complex regarding his musical talent thanks to his older brother being able to play a mean fiddle. The fact that he has a piano inside his soul that actives his black blood powers suggests that he's not as indifferent to his lack of piano-playing as he says he is, though.

Soul joined the DWMA in an effort to break off from his likely otherwise predetermined fate of being a musician. Ironically, however, he met his partner while playing a particularly dark, strange piece of piano music of his own devising. (Way to break from the musician thing, Soul.) His reluctance to discuss his family and past suggest he might still be trying to run away from them, though it's not completely clear why.

Maka's attitude toward school is in total contrast to Soul's. That is to say, she studies hard, is into reading, and is a hard worker. Soul is more like a typical boy his age. He sluffs off on his homework, skips classes, and seems indifferent toward his education. He dislikes studying as well, and is not opposed to cheating on tests if it means he won't have to work hard. Though the two don't mesh at all in terms of study habits, they do make a good pair for the teamwork aspect of their partnership, at least in battle. Soul is willing to yield to a person like Maka simply because he likes that she's capable. She has a plan, and he respects her ability to be in control of things.

Average in most respects, Soul has a pretty laid-back personality. He's never high-energy nor does he act extremely motivated, and he keeps a level head under nearly all circumstances. The kid also has a bit of a stubborn streak, so he and Maka are prone to bickering, especially when they don't see eye to eye regarding missions or chores. He doesn't mince words, and as a result, is often somewhat blunt or sarcastic. You can count on him to say what he really means. Because he's not particularly chatty or social, Soul doesn't try to make connections with people very much and just sticks within his tight circle of friends. He dislikes large social events probably for the same reason, but doesn't seem to mind outings or little gatherings.

Soul also enjoys being "cool". He seems to like the idea of checking out girls, too, though he doesn't actually seem to do it very much, nor does he express much interest in having a girlfriend, implying that he probably still has a pretty shallow perspective on romance. He has also never attempted to pick up a girl in canon.

Because of his somewhat apathetic and seemingly indifferent attitude, he could almost be seen as an unappealing friend, but this isn't the case. Soul is a very dedicated friend who doesn't believe in breaking promises or changing sides, and is even willing to sacrifice himself for Maka's safety by acting as a meat shield! On more than one occasion, he makes it clear that he's the ultimate team player: he says he's willing to die for the safety of his partner. He's loyal and isn't a quitter, even in hard times.

Though he's not as smart or booky as his partner, Soul does make good deductions and can make reasonable battle decisions for himself, which means he has the potential to be an effective battler even on his own.

Extra:
Character Abilities: Soul can transform completely into a scythe with a red and black blade and a derpy face. He can also partially transform--say, one arm into a scythe blade--so that he can fight by himself. (No, that doesn't make sense. It's not your imagination.) Furthermore, because he's been powered up by the collection of specific souls, he's now the enhanced version of a demon weapon, called a death scythe. Because of this, he has a few extra powers. He can make more than one blade come out of his body when partially transformed, and when in his full scythe form, he can sprout little wings, allowing his user to fly around like Card Captor Sakura. 8Db
Possessions: Nothing.
Anything else: He has red eyes and white hair, and yet is somehow not albino, and has really, really pointy teeth, like a shark or something. It may be slightly unnerving for some less animu characters. D:

Oh, and his posture really sucks sometimes.

Okay, not funny.

I don't recognize this place and I don't remember coming here. I wanted to think maybe sending me on a mission without my knowing was someone's idea of a joke, but I'm not that sound of a sleeper.

[He doesn't look impressed, but he doesn't look especially angry, either.]

The gig's up. If I've been kidnapped by somebody, you might as well give yourself up now, or I might have to start doing something about it.

Log/Prose sample: The last thing he remembered was being in class. It was the boring class, too, where you were expected to pass based on academic skill. No missions. No pre-kishin. Just books.

What had he been doing, anyway? Soul remembered choosing a spot at the back of the class in the hopes of not getting caught in his sad attempt to sleep through the lecture, but that seemed to be everything. Wait, but there was a song.

The boy frowned. Somehow the music seemed totally relevant to the fact that he'd woken up in a totally new place, and he couldn't make sense of why. He looked around again. This was nowhere he'd ever been before, but if he was here, Maka had to be, too, right? Right. There was no sense in freaking out just yet. Maka would have headed for a reasonable spot--the entrance to a town or something, maybe--and was probably waiting for him while he wasted time pondering whys and hows.

He would find her and figure out what was going on.

"We would like to know more about Soul's relationships with others. How does he view and treat strangers, friends, or acquaintances?
❁ We would also like to know more about his relationship with Maka. How do they complement each other on a deeper level? Does Maka's presence in Soul's life affect his personality at all?
❁ We would like you to expand on black blood as it relates to Soul, and how it affects him and his personality.
❁ Could you go more in depth into the musical aspect of Soul's life, and how it has affected his personality and/or views of things?
❁ We would like to see a new log sample that showcases more of Soul's personality and focuses more on introspection."

Okay! Um, in the order of your bullet points:

- Soul is not overtly friendly. He acts indifferent toward new people, and there aren't many instances of him talking to people outside of his main group of friends. We can assume he's probably not all that into making lots of new friends. He has respect for each of his friends in sort of the same way he does for Maka--he recognizes their individual skills and strengths, and admires how they compliment one another. Black*Star is his best guy friend, despite their very different outward personalities, and they enjoy having occasional shenanigans together, which may or may not involve skipping class, much to their partners' chagrin.

- Maka an Soul act as a pretty good counterbalance to each other and their personality shortcomings as well. In battle, Maka can become angry and impassioned, whereas Soul remains fairly level-headed at all times. His reasoning helps to keep her in check. He refuses to do anything he believes is a poor choice, strategically or otherwise, which gives Maka the opportunity to re-think her own ideas. Maka, on the other hand, is also a lot more inclined to try to make friends and go places (barring sports events, which she fails to understand). Because Soul is wont to go where his partner goes, this leads him into a lot more social environments than he would end up going to on his own.

- The black blood causes insanity in its user, and the longer the usage, the more likely it will be that the user will be trapped in their insanity permanently. At the point in canon I'm taking him from, Soul and Maka have only used the black blood twice, both times while resonating. The first time, through the resonance, the insanity spread to Maka alone, while Soul was left "hanging on", acting as the anchor to sanity for the two of them. The second time, it didn't seem to have any apparent side-effects, as the two remained totally in control of their minds during the usage. The clearly unpredictable nature of the substance is reasonable cause for worry, and Soul doesn't seem especially eager to use it again because of the potential risk. Early on in the manga, there was an instance in which the black blood caused him to have a kind of weird nightmare, but beyond that, there have only been a few minor mentions of his concern over the matter. Soul has never been personally infected by insanity thus far, though the black blood's personification in his soul (a little demon) sometimes beckons him to give in and use it.

- Like practically everything about Soul (siiiiiigh damnit Ohkubo), music isn't delved into a lot, but seems to be one of the only deeper aspects of his history so far. We can see that he is obviously affected by its absence in his life, despite his denial of the notion. Only a person who put a lot of time and feeling into their music would have their instrument of choice exist inside their very soul, after all. Feelings of ineptitude are probably the foremost reason for his giving up on the piano. It's suggested that he simply didn't want to think have to choose a path in life--that going the DWMA route was the only way when he found out he was a demon weapon. That way, Soul probably felt he wouldn't need to justify his choice; he was a weapon and therefore had to go to the DWMA, and that was that. In one flashback, Soul is keeping up an actually fairly enthusiastic-looking conversation with Liz about a musician they were mutual fans of, so it seems clear to me that he loves music a lot and the continued indifference is a facade of sorts.

- Random prompts are okay, I hope. :9

"Okay, so I think maybe I can cope with the whole... fairytale thing this place has going on, but what I'd really like to know is how someone like me ended up here. As far as I know, I don't deserve any awards for enduring years of abuse at the hands of a wicked stepmother or whatever, so I don't get what's with the wishes.

[Cue cynicism mode.]

I can't seriously be the only person who thinks maybe there's some kind of ulterior motive here. Saying it's 'out of the kindness of their hearts' is kind of pushing it.

Someone want to explain before I over-think this? I'm obviously missing something."

=====

In the midst of battle, he can feel it. It's rippling, deep in the bottom of his soul. Soul tries not to think of it; he focuses instead on the frequent clashes against his blade. Staying alert at times like this is important. He never knows when he'll need to change forms and run, or block high because Maka can't see the next strike from the same angle as he can.

It keeps things more interesting and engages him in a way textbooks never could.

Suddenly he can feel her soul pushing against his, but the warm feeling of insanity is lurking higher in his own, and he almost doesn't want to let her in. The boy conforms, though, and tries to push away the reluctance. He can't tell her he's afraid of resonating when he's like this, with that sticky blackness trying to overtake his whole essence. Soul won't let it take over hers ever again either, if he can help it.

No one deserves it. Not him, and least of all his partner. He'd rather die a gruesome death here and now as her meat shield than let insanity overtake her while she tries to protect both of them.

She can feel it now, though, that awkwardness, and he knows, because when they resonate, it's hard to keep secrets. There's no sense in having secrets in the first place, not in a relationship like theirs. The resonance flickers out of alignment slightly, right as the pre-kishin's ax comes down on Maka's parry with the deafening clatter of metal on metal.

"Soul--" Clang! "--why are you--" Crash! "--stopping?!" The girl makes an effortless leap down from the rooftops with the pre-kishin in hot pursuit.

"It's nothing," Soul says resolutely. And he wants to make sure it won't be anything ever again.

Here and now is all that matters, and it should stay that way.

Screw that piano in his soul.
