Derek shook his head. "Family stuff," he said unenthusiastically. He liked being at the twin's place. Sure the business cut into their hanging out like they used to, but Derek supposed this was what happened as you got older. Even if he still thought it had been stupid of Darin and Taylor- too soon to say the least- right now he appreciated having somewhere to go without parentals- anyone's- around. It felt like they were playing at being adults more than actually adults but he'd take it. And hey, maybe this was how everyone felt when they started acting the part. In any case, it was nice to come to the pub and hang out, during business hours or otherwise

"Nice," Darin agreed sarcastically. He was well aware of the tension in the Bly house lately. It wasn't that it was horrible to be there- Derek's parents at least were still speaking with he and Taylor, which kept Derek's parents on Darin's good list. Cooking for yourself was more work than he'd have imagined and the Blys were good about helping out with free dinners whenever the DeLouise boys showed up. No, it wasn't that you felt uncomfortable there but, well, holidays tended to turn into messes anyway and this year that family had more reasons to be wound up than usual. Shelby and her family dead, the circumstances of that whole thing, blame getting thrown around with Derek's dad and his other sister and now a season that forced them all to get together with the obvious absence of someone who's being there always caused problems. That wasn't even touching current events in general and Canderous being out of a job. Yeah, Darin could imagine why things were off

Derek agreed with Darin's sentiments exactly. It was the beauty of unloading on your best mate. They weren't going to give you the 'what, that's not awkward, quit being a prat' look. The Faybrooke's coming over was fine and well. Derek was sort of looking forward to it. He loved his mum's parents, he just much rather would have gone to them. Now there was no where to flee but the twins or Becca's house. Derek had been doing a lot of that so far and Christmas was still a few days off

"Weird?" Darin gave his friend a look to get him to explain. The kettle started whistling so he moved to pour their water while he waited for more. "How so?"
