Summary: It seems that while everyone is recieving little bits of Christmas joy, Anna is being neglected by Charlie.
“Why is it that she gets a flower and not me?” Anna inquired glumly as she watched Cordelia accept the lovely red and white flower from James.
Not bothering to look up from his computer, Ben replied, “Perhaps James has more of a clue on what women like than Charlie.”
“Yes but James is always so snobbish. He hardly is ever on a date and few women give him the time of day. So how on earth could he know about women and flowers?”
“James is also observant. He manages the restaurant and probably understands why flowers are a necessity. That or he simply had the intelligence to ask Tony what he should get for Cordelia.”
Anna shot Ben an annoyed look. “Are you saying that Charlie doesn’t know what a woman wants?”
“He, like every other male, can only guess, and pray to God that he has chosen correctly.” Ben finally looked up from his computer but he did not smile. Anna’s daydreaming and whining sometimes grated upon his nerves so much that he wish he could just step away from reception forever. He continued, “But Charlie is also a proud man and thinks he knows everything about women. He just has a hard time expressing it and getting it right.”
A small smile of appreciation spread across Anna’s lips. “So I see that Tony and James aren’t the only observant ones here. So, speaking of being observant… Ben…”
“No Anna.”
“Oh please!” Anna begged, pushing closer to her co-worker. “You must know if Charlie is going to be doing something special for me! It’s getting closer to Christmas and a fruitcake is hardly what I would call a gift that one would give to someone that they were madly in love with!”
“As I told you a half-hour ago, I know nothing of Charlie’s plans.” Ben sighed in annoyance and hastily side-stepped away from her. “Why don’t you go ask Charlie himself if you are that curious!”
“Oh don’t be daft Ben. A woman won’t ever ask the man. She’d rather be surprised.”
Ben blinked. Sometimes she really made no sense at all! Looking over at her, Ben raised a brow and inquired, “So then why are you asking me?”
“Because a girl likes to be surprised when she finds out what that surprise is so she can act even more surprised when the surprise actually happens!” Anna sighed contentedly as she leaned against the counter, her right foot rising off the ground as she did so.
Ben shook his head and looked to his computer. “You know that made no sense whatsoever.”
But Anna was no longer paying attention. Instead she watched as Cordelia and James headed for the elevator. Anna narrowed her eyes and a sly grin took over her smile. “Her Christmas has already started off wonderfully because James has been taking advice from Tony! She even got a flower from him today and what have I gotten, fruitcake!”
“Just let it go Anna!” Ben said, trying to keep his voice under control. “I’m sure Charlie will get the hint, someday…”
“Well, perhaps I should make that day today.” Anna suddenly straightened and began a quick march towards the General Manager’s office.
“What are you doing?” Ben asked, looking at her with alarm. “Don’t tell me you’re going to leave me here alone, again!”
“Oh, I’m sure you can manage,” Anna said with a grin. “After all, you do have Tony to go to in case you should need any help.”
