The Space Between Things
Jack wakes up in the arms of another being… This is not so unusual.
What is unusual is that the other being is Ianto. Jack takes a minute, several minutes, in point of fact, to stare at his mumbling young (old) lover as his eyes move behind his eyelids in REM sleep. He wonders what Ianto could possibly be dreaming about. There is so much in that head of his…. Jack saw it when he was in there defeating Ianto’s “Jack” demon. Ianto is too calm for it to be anything bad… Jack has seen Ianto in the throes of nightmare. (the cyberwoman seems so much less now) It’s not Daleks or Nightmare Children or Has Been’s or ….
Wait….What’s that?
“….Jack…… tickles…. nofairjack….” Ianto’s mumblings (Ianto has always mumbled in his sleep) startle him. The Timelord who has seen more, who knows more than would fit into the Hub’s Archives three times over, is dreaming about him. He grins and snuggles back into the satin sheets. He’s not ready to face the trials of gods.

Ianto wakes up in the arms of another being… This is not so unusual.
What is unusual is that he’s waking up at all. That was his first night as a Timelord again in 26 years. It feels… not much different than his nights as the Archivist for Torchwood 3. Ianto wonders if he proactively dreamed of Jack before he became Ianto. It seems like he’s always dreamed of Jack. Speaking of, he takes a minute, 6.27 minutes, in point of fact, to stare at his old (young) lover as his eyes move behind his eyelids in REM sleep. He doesn’t have to wonder anymore what Jack is dreaming about. He’s been inside Jack’s head. He knows the nightmares that plague his mind. (the Year that Never was …Ianto will have to discuss this with the Doctor later.) Jack is twitching … beginnings of one of these.
Wait… What’s that?
“…take it back…… not him….” Jack’s mumblings (Jack rarely mumbles in his sleep. Only when it’s bad.) startle him. The Time Agent, who’s had more lovers, lost more people, and been through more deaths than anyone should have a right to… is dreaming about him. His death…. That death. Ianto frowns and snuggles into Jack, whispering and touching his forehead. “it’s alright Jack. I’m still here.”
The twitching stills and the arms tighten.
“Ianto….” Jack breathes.
They slide back into sleep until the Tardis wakes them. The Doctor has returned… It’s time for discussion.
The men wake in their usual way, as though neither has had mind-blowing revelations recently (only mind-blowing sex), burying things for just a bit longer with gentle touches and soft moans. When they are sated and showered, they make their way to the control room of the gently singing Tardis, donning their mantels and preparing silently to be omnipotent once more.
