Various updates on things that keep me alive

Breakfast today was toasted rustic bread, creamy raw-milk cheese, fried eggs, and proper tea. Other than the tea all the components came from local farms. To say it was yummy is an understatement. And I can now attest from personal experience that yes, eggs that have recently come from a chicken are leagues better than what you get off the shelves ( Read more... )

I have tons of grape tomatoes just waiting to become red (some are starting to turn) so that's nice at least. My big tomato plant isn't producing the goods yet, though it does have flowers. I'm hoping maybe it's slow due to all the rain.

I have my first carton of farm-fresh eggs in my fridge as we speak, courtesy of a co-worker. YUM. In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with the onions this year... they do not last in the cool, dark place as they should. Also, they seem to be spawning tiny flying "friends" in every produce section I've seen lately.

Have you been getting a lot of rain? We've had TONS of rain here, which has only helped the blight. Not sure if maybe all that excess moisture would affect onions in the way you're seeing.

It's been back and forth between blazing heat and pouring rain, which I'm sure isn't helping anything with anything. Blah.

But mmmmmmm eggs :)

My wife and I are on the team that started a farmer's market in our local community--now in it's third season. Extremely satisfying, and a whole lot of work.

Incidentally, I suspect you meant "canning" above. That other term applies to either school disciplinary methods (now proscribed) or reweaving seats in cane-bottom chairs. :)

Yes! Fresh eggs are just *amazing* and I love them so much. And fresh and local veggies - I feel so lucky that there's a huge local foods movement here, so it's relatively easy and inexpensive for me to do it all.

And that sounds like a very, very cool service. We have one sorta similar in which they deliver a box, but the contents aren't completely customizable, there's about a dozen items and you can substitute up to 3.

I am so, so sorry about the local tomatoes :(

We've got CSAs like that around here, but the shares for 2009 were all taken by the time I looked into it. Which is just as well since looking into it made me find this service, which is way more awesome and also delivers meat.

I WANT MY SUMMER TOMATOES DAMN IT.

I love tomato season. Just picked up a 25-lb box of tomatoes at the Farmer's Market this morning to make homemade tomato sauce to stock up the freezer for the rest of the year. And okra's in season too! So we'll be have slow-braised beef with okra and potatoes tomorrow.

Mmmmm.

See, I've been waiting for the August tomatoes to come in because those are usually the best, but we'll see how it goes. They're saying we might not have much of a harvest thanks to the blight.
