I like your rambly thoughts, and hope they are indeed prescient!
what does the doll/base model bring to the equationThis is the point that, I think, is really going to be the crux of the show--because the whole "blank slate" thing in the very first scene pretty much stated outright that the show *will* operate from the POV that a person's identity/self is, in some way, absolute and incorruptible and *permanent*. It's in trying to deny or evade that innate identity that the Dollhouse negates the actives' personhood, and therefore ought to be considered a Very Bad Place

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I had not considered the show in relation to BSG but that makes total sense and is very intriguing. Disturbing as hell, but that isn't a complaint.
But in Dollhouse it wouldn't just be death - as I'm sure we'll see people die - but death of a person. A character who we thought was a character but was actually an Active.
You know, I would be really impressed by that, except that Babylon 5 did it 14 years ago.
Fox and ME should perhaps put you on the payroll. I was pretty much ready to let Dollhouse fall off my radar until I read your interpretation of what was happening. Now, damn it, I'll watch the ten episodes Fox will air and buy the boxset after Fox cancels the show and go see the movie Joss makes of the second season.
Well to be fair I still have Friday Night Lights grabbing that spot on my Tivo. I'm watching Dollhouse via Hulu. So there's potential, but not so much that I'm tuning in on the dot at 9pm ;)
