Because your liberal arts degree only has thrust capacity to escape Earth's gravity, and after that it's at the mercy of the next large body that happens by. Sorry 'bout that. Should've gotten an engineering degree.

That was one of our simulations freshman year. We had an hour in a locked room with random slides of the moon being flashed by on the projection screen. I lost points for being right, but not being able to convince my group of my logic. The fact that my groups logic included "You're a girl, you can't possibly know more about science and survival tactics than us" made the professor give them a bit of a lecture on listening to everyone. (They lost points too. We didn't do so hot that time. Or ever again, since they kept underestimating me.)

Your story reminded me of an example in high school in which we were to imagine we were about to leave Earth to colonize another planet. We were then supposed to talk about what kind of roles people would assume once we got to the planet. Everyone else in class thought we should just wait and assign jobs once we got there, which struck me as a bad plan back then. I figured everything would go more smoothly if there were already at least some sort of leadership plan in place. I kept trying to convince them they should listen to me.

It was for a civics class, so they all became congresswomen (it was an all-girls school) and I became a lobbyist.
