The poor seedlings!

Inspired by my goal to create a commmunity garden next to my building at work (something I don't yet have official support on from either residents or landowners - but have been nudging various folks about for a couple of years), today I took steps to get my own vegetables growing at home ( Read more... )

The plan is to put it out in the back patio - so she won't be the one eating them. (The neighborhood toms strolling our fence might, though). I would love to try it inside my apartment, but from what I've heard, they won't get enough light through the glass.

I've never had luck starting veggies from seed, and so always end up buying plants from the farmer's market. I wonder if a full-spectrum bulb on a timer might help things grow inside? I know that the african violets I've got near my full-spectrum bulb over my recliner (helps with my winter blues) seem to like it.

That's a great suggestion. I actually do have space for one pot of veggies out on the balcony/fire escape, but a grow light at the other window would be perfect! As for the seeds, I did get basil started a couple of years ago; if I can't get these to germinate, I'll try to find seedlings in a few weeks.
