The adventures we chose

So, as normal, the fact something is old reminded me of my own history. Monday’s article about the 20th anniversay of the Fighting Fantasy books made me realize that those books served a vital purpose in my youth.
I've been a gamer since I got a copy of the red box . Possibly before that, but nature and nurture and who wants to get into all that ( Read more... )

>> Curse you, Sho Kosugi and your bewitching ways!

Man, are you begging to get your ass kicked, cursing the man like that? You know he's listening.

I'm just saying ... I wouldn't get caught writing that sort of stuff, unless my name was Sonny Chiba.

I was cured of my ninjaphobia by seeing how quickly they fell in The Last Samurai, plus how dumb people look in those little pajama outfits in the really real world.

The Rule of Ninja always applies. The more there are, the worse they are, but a lone ninja? Look out. Since peace loving Kisogi works alone ... normally after ninja clans wreck his garden or smash up his bakery, when he dons his discarded garb and makes them "Pray for Death."

If it makes you feel younger, it's actually the 25th anniversary. I did an article about the 19th anniversary, once!

Also - 1 AM to 5 AM? Wow.

I ALMOST envy the ability to play in that time slot.

It is a young man's game. Ing session.

They were interested in playing Werewolf when they saw Metallical lyrics printed in the rulebook.

I'd have figured it was some kind of gaming group for people on the evening shift, or something. For a while, I was working 8 PM to 1 AM most weeknights, and missing a lot of gaming sessions. A session in that time slot would have rocked. :)

Soup truck?

That would actually work pretty well if you were in that sort of situation. I never really had any night shifts of that type.

Fighting Fantasy! From the weird metrics of "Testing your Luck" to the brutal violence, I remember these fondly. I really ought to buy a parcel of 'em from eBay and page through them on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Also: most of them had higher replay value than, say, the Lone Wolf series because it was almost impossible to find the correct solution on the first try through. Or even the fifth try. I had particular trouble with the Star Trek knockoff, Appointment with F.E.A.R. and one where you traipse through a forest looking for two pieces of a relic.

Oh, and House of Hades was guaranteed nightmare fuel.

I actually pre-date your initial gaming experience by about a year with the original John Eric Holmes "Blue Book" boxed set.

ADD&D came shortly after that (around the time just before Dieties & Demigods) and then Champions and then... well after that things got "ugly" . :P
