My 9 year old just follows the main plot and doesn't sweat the backstory. Usually when he asks me questions about stuff, it's because he knows I am a walking encyclopedia about comics trivia, not because he's confused.
I love that it just doesn't show truly epic knock-down superhero biff-fests, but it shows how Hydra, AIM, etc all link together taking the interweaven nature of the Marvel Universe for granted (and if we have Grim Reaper and Wonder Man - how long until the Vision shows up.)
I think the writing nails it, I just wish the animation was better.

Say what you will about cartoons based on toys, you got to know the characters. Until Wave 2 came out. But there was enough consistency.

My 9-year-old son thinks it is absolutely awesome. And I'm not bothering to tell him most of the trivia.

Besides, guys over 30 buy DVD sets, and kids will just absorb this shit like a sponge. Disney is kinda brilliant with this.

The animation is pretty good; at least on par with some of the DC OAVs.
I'm also kind of ashamed to admit I really like the theme song.
